Introduce yourself
Ohanamama, I am curious (and always looking for a good place to swim in or around Puna): what beach do your kids swim at? The only one I've found so far is Kehena and that's a little dangerous, especially for keiki. Thanks for any tips.

Hi Maud gonne -First I have to ask about your name...is is gone mad?? I love it if it is!

We go to Onekahakaha -and no I still cannot say it! Its shallow with sandy areas protected by man made rock walls. Its great for the little ones, usually has plenty of parking except for the weekends has bathrooms and showers and lifeguard. Its near Hilo town,

Another one is Ahalanui or the Hot Pond near Kapoho, There is a danger of staph and other ikies there, but there is a keiki section near ocean, you have walk down the left side all the way to the end, it's walled off and all the kids love that one because they can swim and snorkel. It's well protected and the warm water makes it nice when it raining or cloudy. I know the danger of infections is there, however we went every day for a week one time with no bad results, however if you have a weakened immune system it is not a good idea. The kids really like this spot. There are showers, lifeguard and gross port-a-potty bathrooms in the parking lot. Parking on the weekends is horrible on nice days. Go early!

I am also wanting to go check out "Champagne Ponds" but have vague directions on how to get there! Also Honolii just north of hilo.

It is possible to swim in Hilo bay, but I've heard sewage get dumped into the bay, there was an article in the paper saying its not as bad as people think, but I never see people there, I think the water is colder too. Haven't tried it tho..

This is a good link for beach conditions around the island, and has good directions too!

Where exactly is Onekahakaha I love swimming at Champagne Pond, or used to - until the latest sewage horror stories. I've had to give it up, temporarily...

I was actually looking to check out Yeats at the library a couple of days ago, gave up because the kids were ready to go! Its a sign - I'll have to try again!

Onekahakaha: Go past the airport towards Hilo, turn right just before you get to banyan drive (the waffle house is on the left corner of the stoplight) follow road down a ways.. there will be a sign on the right side of the road that says Onekahakaha, it's the next left. It's easy to miss, I drove by it the first time,( or it could be just the blonde gene!?) it looks like a residential road. once there park in the lot on the right, you'll see where to go from there.

Please note these directions were written in the female directional language, I hardly ever know what road I'm actually on!!

aloha all!

i haven't written in a while as i have been away. it has been nice to see the aloha spirit alive and well on the punaweb. i had introduced myself when this thread first started, but thought it might be nice to just say aloha. i am living and working in shanghai, china right now. i will be here the remainder of this year, and then am headed straight for hawai'i, for good! some of you may recall i was an artist (www.holahangallery.com).

well, if anyone is interested, china is amazing. the people, culture and FOOD are unbelievable. i needed to leave the mainland and a great opportunity (and beautiful woman!) came up in china before hawai'i, so i decided to take it. hawai'i will always be there for me, and soon! at any rate, china is very different than the mainland, but alot of things here remind me of hawai'i. even though i'm in the biggest city in the country, i never feel unsafe, and am amazed at how much tolerance and peace there is. a form of "aloha" you might say. people's lives are simple and most seem content and happy. i've seen things i will never forget, and i think the experience is exactly what i needed before heading back to the aina for good. alot of peace...

well, hope all is well on the orchid isle, and i'll keep folks posted. hoping to be set-up on my spot in HPP at the end of the year.

take care and enjoy the aloha...

yi huir jian!

Mahalo Menehune for the welcome! Got some good news. Gerald interviewed in Denver with the Hawaii DOE for a teaching position on the Big Island and they offered him one! Yeah! Now we just have to get this ranch sold and be on our way. Can't wait to be back in Hawaii and to meet all of you![8D]

Aloha!
