2 Million Awarded to Lava Tree Park Improvements
#1
Wow... I'm amazed

Just when we thought Puna was getting shafted they come up with some dinero [Wink]

Lava Tree State Monument on the Big Island near Paahoa is scheduled to get more improvements — $2 million worth — with some design work slated to begin later this year.

My question then.... where is Paahoa? [Big Grin] Freaking Advertiser's breaking news items crack me up sometimes. They obviously cut and pasted the article from the Gov's Media release here

Ok ... I'm going to say it [V]

I really doubt Lingle has ever been to Lava Tree State park.

$2 Million Dollars is a lot of money.

There are much better uses of $2 million right now in the Puna District.

We need to start making noise to start receiving more State funding.

Obviously the County hasn't provided that well in the last 20-30 years.

If the State has the money.... then we need to ask for it![:p]

My first thought when I read this in the newspaper was $2 million for THAT!? When I see much greater needs in medical, schools, roads. I must say that the park is OK, kinda interesting...but not that great. Does it attract people to Puna on it's own? Will it with the improvements? Will that bring more money to the area? I just don't think so.

When we first moved here years ago, the Lava Tree state park was really nice - very shady (yes I know Albezia trees are evil) and had a private, secluded feel. With all the accessibility improvements and the chopping down of trees, I feel it has lost a lot of its special feel already.

Oh well.

(Not that I am against accessibility improvements - in fact I praise the ADA any time I push a stroller around downtown).

For $2M I could build a NEW Lava Tree Park! Somebody's uncle will get a nice chunk of that money! [Smile]

Here's another kicker:

......Contractor General Construction started a separate $221,000 project in February to make parking, the comfort station and pathways accessible to people with disabilities. That's expected to wrap up by the end of summer.....

That park is getting lots of attention.

I wonder who gets the contract for this latest 2 million?
