"Still, hospital staff brought out the patient to see the horse, but the relative was wrong on two counts -- it was the wrong horse and didn't even belong to the patient."

from today's honolulu star bulletin.

perhaps they will hear

I have been blessed with wonderful animals over the years as well, there's nothing quite like a good animal friend.

Max is a sharpei-lab, he looks like Scooby-doo without the spots. He came to me as a stout, little, wrinkly bundle. His siblings were going to the pound, a friend had rescued him and was looking for a home. I think we both knew he'd found it and I had found one of my best friends ever. That was 13 years ago, he has stood by my side through some real joys and sorrows, my protector, so mellow and steady and strong.

HoneyGirl is a shepherd-mix. I had land out in the boonies and was having to spend more time away from home for school and business. Max has always gotten lots of attention from neighbors and the like even when I wasn't home with him. I felt like he deserved some good companionship so I kept checking the pound for a while until I found HoneyGirl... She is a SPAZ, but such a loving girl. If she can ever learn to sit still when she gets petted then she might just finally be satisfied with a good scratch!

Weedy is another of those cats that thinks he's a dog... he came up to me at the Hilo Lagoon on Halloween night one year, tiny little orange tiger with a caked up, goopy eye... He went through at least 10 names (Punkin' Pirate, Fergus McKitty, Yurt... I finally refused to take suggestions from well-meaning friends anymore!) before we figured out it was Weedy. One day when I was weed-eating I looked back and saw that he would hide in the tall grass and then leap into the air doing back-flips as the long grass flew over his head. (Don't worry, he had no intention of coming anywhere within 10 feet of the end of that thing!) He's a brave bugger and the best mouser I've ever seen, I usually have 2 dead mice and an occasional rat in my drive by my truck most mornings. He trained with HoneyGirl growing up, so... Yeah.. *HILARIOUS*

Then there's Lolly, the cockatiel. He's kind of new, we're still slowly establishing trust (between the bird and the rest of us in the zoo), but the guaivi fruits that I bring to his dish help...

And the fish I rescued, Leo the Lonely Beta. Not so lonely anymore though, Weedy goes over and says hello quite a bit. I think Leo likes it, his colors are getting brighter every day.

That's my mini-zoo... and the part-time horse we all seem to share in my neighborhood, he just runs around wherever, riles up HoneyGirl and fertilized my lawn quite a bit... as long as he stays out of the garden then I'll keep my lasso roped.

Lately when I pass each of these creatures I try to remember real appreciation, I feel blessed, blessed, blessed.

New story chapter started. Flash, 3 month old, flashy brindle boxer boy. Flew Air New Zealand from Auckland to HNL arriving 9:45 last evening. Cleared customs and airport quarantine station this morning and flew Hawaiian with Dad to Hilo. First truck ride from Hilo to home to meet his new Mommy, the girls Ruby and Kalani, as well as the cat thingy.

lol, pets have some of the funniest personalities! Smile

We have a rottweiler, 3 cats and 2 chickens. The cats haven't made it over yet, but they're sure to love it. Sadie (our dog) sits with the chickens, and our mother hen goes right up to Sadie and sits with her in the evenings on the lawn. I can't believe how well the dog gets along with the other animals. The cats rub up against her and get baths from her, and she's totally devoted to our family... people, pets and all!

However she is very protective of her domain (ie. the house and yard as well as the car when she's in it!) but once someone comes through our door, they're her new BFF! hehehe..

David,that's wonderful news!
Is he "a boxer or barker"?
Haven't seen the pics yet - too much Yahoo hoops.

P.S. Did I hear the "c"-word?
I thought you are not a "c"-person...

Though I moved to Hawaii with 2 dogs and 2 cats, I am currently (and sadly) without. One of the reasons I can't wait to move to the Big Island when we retire is that my husband has promised me I can get a dog as a housewarming present, but he has to pick it out. Why? My history of picking out dogs that are not quite "all there":

Libby, a lab mix (110 pounds!) was an impulse acquisition from a "free puppies" box in front of a walmart. I had her in college, and at one point the white tip on her tail was dyed pink to match my hair [Smile] but she was never the brightest, and when she was full grown, was diagnosed by the vet as being mentally disabled.
Then there was Topo, another lab mix- I got him when I got out of the army from the pound. In Cheyenne, they let you take prospective adoptees out in a yard to play. He was so excited, he kept running in circles, and won my heart. It turns out he ran in circles because he had been abused and had a brain injury that affected his motor skills. Both dogs dumber than a box of rocks, but great companions. I still miss them.
