Tried Asparagus?

Has anyone planted asparagus? I have a wonderful new recipe!

It is easy to grow, however I'm not sure if conditions on island allow this to be a viable vegetable to grow there. Thanks!

I don't know how it's done, but they grow it commercially here in Waialua Oahu! Same type weather, it should thrive, and is darn good!

I'm not sure how you get the assumption that the weather in Waialua, Oahu is anywhere close to the weather in Puna.

I can tell mella that Bacon Wrapped Asparagus over a grill is the bomb though. [^]

Even better, wrap with prosciutto, drizzle w/ olive oil, bake at 450 but should work well on the grill, too!

they well here in calif as you know, i think they need some hibernating time to start off new shoots or else they just develop into semi-ferny looking trees.

Asparagus grows well here. You have to plant about ten times as much as you would on the mainland though since it doesn't all make spears at the same time. It still makes spears but just sort of at random times so unless you have a lot of it or freeze the spears when you get them, you won't ever have enough of it at one time to eat.

Varieties like Mary Washington will normally take two years to produce decent sized spears. But they do grow well. Normally you would plant them in a trough so that as they grew upwards, you can fill in the trough so that it doesn't fall over. Otherwise you may need to stake the plants up.

So chickens, goats (for cheese) and asparagus, don't need much more than that! LOL

Hi Noel, don't let the asparagus go to fern! It needs to be pruned and trimmed somewhere in the process. When you get fern the plant has gone to seed!

I looked into it and there is a lot of good info @ UH online! It seems the new strains are mostly all male. It likes sweet 6-7 PH and deep trenches, probably worth covering in small plantings! But they are growing it in the field on Oahu and Calif!
Some strains like a killer frost, be sure to avoid those! Plus it's supposed to be able to handle brackish water!
Damon, anything that would grow in any lowland region in the islands would grow in Puna! The only thing unique to here is lack of dirt @ major poverty!
