Yipes! ITO to LAX big $$
#1
I was just about to book a June flright to L.A. when ATA went down.

Just checking fares now shows everything to be more than doubled.

Lowest number I saw was around $750 rt

(Flright is not a typo)

Assume the best and ask questions.

There is a "company" that was actually set up by some folks from my old high school called Yapta.

It actually tracks trip prices, and if a trip you purchased drops in price... you get that dropped price.

They just went into business about 4 - 5 years ago.

We've been looking at ticket prices too. A round trip tickets for 2 out of Oakland or Sacramento are running in the $1200 to $1300 range. Last year was less than $750 (for 2 on ATA). I wonder how big an impact the increase will have on Hawaii's economy.

I've been looking at ticket prices myself. One thing you can try if you don't mind a little bit longer travel time is to book your flight into Honolulu and then take an inter-island flight to ITO. I found this to be about $100-200 cheaper last time I looked, it does add about 2 hours to your travel time. You can also find more discount flights to Honolulu on some of the ticket sites.

The only way to save money flying out of the Big Island to the mainland is to go Non-Stop from Kona. I know it takes a 2 hour drive to the other side of the island...and you may have some extra miles to drive once you get to the west coast....but with an advance purchase....you can fly to LA. San Fran, or Seattle for Around $550.

My wife bought a roundtrip airfare (traveling in May) from Kona to Seattle 2 weeks ago for $399.00. Now it's $550.00.

Also Summertime travel has historically always been high priced.

KOA - LAX for our Oct trip is $478 non-stop

And it is only a 4.5 hr trip so add the 2+ hours to KOA and it is still time wise the same or even less. And HNL airport doesnt have Tex's malasadas along the way!

What do residents do about parking at KOA, or do you get chauffeured both ways?

I believe Kona Airport is the same as Hilo Airport. Its self park and it's $7.00 a day.

I just looked at the fares for summertime travel to and from the Islands in general and Rob is right...I couldn't find anything under $850.00 a person when you include tax.
