Some simple questions occur. If it's a new tree, maybe there was something wrong/damaged in the first place. Did you go back to the nursery/source and talk to them? I'd be hesitant to rely on a damaged tree - at best it will take a number of years to recover general condition. I'd also plant several trees - you can always thin them out if one/few take off in a couple of years - that's better than putting all the eggs in one basket and waiting 3-5 years to find out the one tree didn't take.

Good Advice Olin137, I really can't "take it back" as I got it at the farmers market....and I might have even damaged it in transit - it was about a week after I planted it that I noticed the split, after some strong winds so I can't really say if it was that way when I got it.
I do however think you are right about putting all my lemons in one basket! we have plenty of room so I'm sure I'll plant more.....You can never have too much lemonade!!

It is a good idea to have a couple of different varieties, esp ones that flower/fruit early & late, that way you can have a long season. One mature citrus here can supply more citrus than you can use, but most have a peak season when most of the fruit ripens, good to trade at the farmers market, give to friends & people you don't know, do squish experiments & such (OK, maybe most will forgo the experiments....but they are fun!)
We have 3 citrus on our yard & neighbor has 6 more... during Nov & dec we are floating in citruses....have planted some a couple of spring fruiting citrus & am trying to find a Meyers Lime (summer fruit) The best idea is to try to get year round fruits so you don't have to process any.

Where's the best place (in lieu of the Plant It Hawaii sale) to get citrus?

Carrie, there are a number of nurseries if you can't make it to the Plant It Hawaii sale this Friday & Sat., many sell Plant it plants (for a little more $) We went to the BIAN sale a couple of months ago & purchased a Passionfruit from a Puna grower, didn't get who, but think it was "Fruit Lovers" in Pahoa:
www.fruitlovers.com
If I had been thinking, I would have gotten a list of the growers.... but I wasn't!
Good luck (& if you need an advance person for the sale....)
