In Denmark, you lose your driver's license for 5 years, NO EXCEPTIONS for DUI. No specialized work driving, etc.
Maybe if we stopped coddling criminals and actually punished them for their actions, we'd have less crime.
Dunno, does selling drugs to grade school kids warrant jail time?
I vote yes

i work in a locked down youth treatment facility in Alaska. I was very sadden to see the youth corrections facility in Ohau and the way the youth are treated. In my view the way Hawaii does things is wrong. I see very little treatment only doing time. they might as well be in the adult system. this is the time to make a difference in their lives
many of the youth like their lifestyle and few want to change. 75% or more go on to do time in adult corrections. 3% will die before they are 24, they like getting drunk and high. stealing for their habits from me, you, strangers, family whoever. however some do want to change and do. they become good fathers and mothers and its because people care enought to listen and not give up on them. being nonjudgemental helps
if all they did is get high on pot i think they would be a sucess! here me out. ive yet to see a stoner living in a ditch. the sad part is they go home to the same environment they came from. the family doesnt get thearpy.
if you could see what they have been through @ 4 years old it would floor you. parents and family of the youth need to be held accountable for what they expose to their children. sexual abusers need to be shot!
ill stop now before i upset someone.
peace

they reported on the news yesterday that in the u.s. one in ten adults are now in prison, the most in the world, so locking more people up is not the answer

Just an idea, but the
recidivism rate is an indicator of how badly mistreated the prisoners are. If prisoners were treated inhumanely, or sadistically, why would 60-70% of them re-offend and return to prison within 3 years of their release? We all have freedom of choice, and some people choose to re-offend after having had a jail/prison experience. And the recidivism rate is increasing, not decreasing.
Again, just an opinion, but I think there is a substantial subset of Americans who refuse to follow the rules of a civilized society, even after having due process, having been locked up, warned on probation or parole, etc. They choose to re-offend, over and over until it catches up with them. Look at the threads here on Punaweb about home burglary, theft, drunk driving, etc. The underlying problems may be alcoholism and drug abuse, and I beleive in treatment for those addictions, but the offenders choose to burglarize our homes to support their habits. I do not believe in treatment for thieves or drunk drivers. You can do all the drugs and alcohol you want to in the privacy of your own home, but when you take your addictions out into society, you've made yourself subject to incarceration.
