Has anyone successfully grown spinach?
#1
Is there a trick to germinating spinach? I've gotten fresh seed pack from JohnnySeeds but am having no luck getting the spinach to come up. I've tried a couple times without success. Has anyone here successfully grown them?

Thanks!

spinach can be a tough start. Try warm wet paper towels.. couple layers.lay the seeds on and cover with another wet papertowel. Place in a window where it gets sunlight for warmth. It's worth a try!

Once germnated, put into peat moss or potting soil until you get plant with leaves a couple inches tall.... then they can go into the ground. If you put your newly germnated plants into the garden the chickens will grab them because they look like worms Smile

Good Luck; keep trying.

There is a vine variety called New Zealand spinach. Might be a little hard starting, but produces like mad.

I grow spinach in HPP way down on E. I tried to grow it with hydroponics first but that don't work very well only 10/15% grew. I grow it in 1/2 55 gal. drum with holes in the bottom. I use both hydroponics and drums to grow. I grow every thing beans, carrots, cucumber, garlic, lettuce, onions, peas, peppers, spinach and squash and I any about to try celery, corn and melons.

Very encouraging to know that spinach can grow here in Puna. Larry, do you sow the seeds directly on the soil or do you start them indoors?

I went to the Farmers Coop and Ohana Greenhouse yesterday and got different tips (1) sowing in rolled up damp paper towel in ziploc indoors and (2) using the tray/dome/plugs under flourescent (sp?) light.

Thank you all for the tips & input, will try them and let you know the results.

Well Sunday I planted some spinach in 3 gal pots that are slightly deeper (or taller). I'm hoping to see something good happen here...got my fingers crossed!

I plant in soil in my green house. It too wet outside, spinach does not like so much water I think that is why hydroponics did not work. ( to wet)Any one wanting to see my set up give me a Email I am down on E in HPP. The paper towel may work, but damp not wet when in a covered area.

Cat,

Were the seeds about 3/16 inch long,1/8 wide and somewhat irregular? If so it is probably kang kong = pahk boong = Chinese water spinach. If so, it will definitely grow like a ground cover - all over your yard and you if you move too slowly LOL.
