What about electric fences? Some people had those in Texas.
Carey what about asking the grubbing/ripping dude to poke the fencepost holes?

The question is do you want to grub your lot to the edge to facilitate a machine(backhoe with a drill or buster) which on an 8ksf lot will essentially clear the whole lot after house pad and septic system are established.
The alternative is to shoot the boundries and clear a 4' swath, strip the top off each hole, and with a 100CFM (minimum) comprssor, 100' of hose and a 80lb rock drill, drill 2'X2"dia holes every 10ft.
Then haul out your posts, insert, plumb and cement your posts(cement fill the corners).
Now you stretch the wire to the posts and rock fill the irregularities of the ground below.
Remember, 100' is the closest your vehicle will be able to help you.
Do your own the first time, and you will see 8K a a bargain!
Electric fence is strictly for animals unless you go 220AC, in which case you'll go to jail.

You seem to think that getting rid of the vegetation is BAD. BAD like in Bee Ay Dee put together to form...BAD. As in "this is a very BAD (Bee Ay Dee) thing". Okay, I get that going to jail for electrocuting thieves = BAD. Grubbing the lot to the edges = ....electrocuting thieves??? I'm having a hard time with the math but if I learned anything from my 7 years of college, it is that 8k = mucho moolah.
The vehicle thing I didn't get at all. Are you saying we should use the family stationwagon to fence our yard???
Now on a slightly more serious note...we went to Home Depot today, and it looks like they rent that backhoe for around $40 for four hours.

That's nice of them to throw in a $120 gate.
I don't know...what if it is a really nice gate? I don't know what kind they offered you so I should probably not make assumptions. I was just talking about the regular chain link fence seen here:

Not fancy at all...so maybe we're not talking about the same fence. I apologize if I sounded snarky.

Maggie, The link from Lowes is a light-mid weight 11.5 gauge wire fencing... 9 gauge is heavy mid weight & 6 gauge is the tough industrial stuff that is really hard to enter, and lasts a longer time .... if the galvanized coating is applied thick enough....
there are many excellent sites, inc.:
http://www.fenceonline.com/abcschainlink.html
http://www.doityourself.com/stry/chainlinkfaq
that cover the ins & outs of choosing the fence materials...
Cannot tell what materials the quote you are using as a reference covers.... so do not know if these are comparing the same things... (the lightest weight 12.5 guage chain link is almost half the thickness of the wire in 6 gauge chain link... and is usually very inexpensive compared to 6 gauge...)

We got the Biggest Jack Hammer/Compressor Combo they had at Puna Rentals to dig Holes for our fruit trees. We went back and got the rock drill too...
It still took me 2 hours to make 1 hole...
LOL I was beat after just a few holes (3) [:I]
and it looked like it was gonna be easy [xx(]
Take our word for it... digging holes in Puna is NOT as easy as it looks... hehehe
Hopefully you dont meet Mr. BlueRock like I did....
Good Luck!!!!
