SOME lava rock is porous.... But remember adze rock is also lava.... The dense core of an a'a flow can be some of the more dense basalt rocks... (Bluerock is a name for this dense basalt... & there are usually layers of it on (under) most areas...
IF this stuff was easy to deal with, there would be no need for D-9 & D-10 bulldozers with weld reinforced plates.... this stuff is tough to work with, and it was only when the humungo sized bulldozers were bought here that this rock could be worked.

This is the only place I have lived where the size of a bulldozer used on your lot is normal conversation - I was at a tea where ladies were discussing D-9s & D-10's... without any further reference & everyone knew what was being talked about.... I am pretty sure no where else but Hawaii would this be so...

Maggie, you might look at previous threads about clear cutting, very unpopular! Unless you bought an albesia infestation, in which case fencing will be the least of your problems. Even a D-9 won't rip closer than 6' from your property line.
Your knowledge of the subject is appearant with your Home Depot 40$ for 4 hours backhoe! That's a 10$ per hour backhoe: Do your homework.

Found out that an owner-builder friend will do it for $150 an hour for labor if I got it right. We better use his service quick because he's moving to the mainland in a few months.

We're going to need to put up 4 foot fencing at least around the parimeter of the back yard as soon as we get to Keaau as we have small dogs and we're close to the road. I printed off everything that's been listed here so far to read through in detail. Does anyone know of a reputable company to put this fencing up for us? If so, could you give me the contact information please.
