There are many great building ideas, not all of them appropriate for BI or parts of the BI. May I suggest, that before taking any forum advice, especially on building that the advice is appropriate. IMHO the best building advice here is based on experience, and yes, I do mean local experience. The theory of building a house on Hawaii and the experience of house building on Hawaii may be quite different.
This forum is a great resource, search it, ask questions, share info. We all benefit.

Even building on different sides of the island requires different methods. Kawaihae gets less than ten inches of rain a year while the Hilo side gets over 200 or so. What works well in Kawaihae may not thrive in Puna.

Also occasionally the folks posting haven't actually had any experience in the realm they are posting in which can add to the mis-information out there. But, then, it IS free advice and you get what you pay for.

I heartily agree! Design for this climate, not where you were from unless that "from" resembles the climate of the Big Island where you are goign to reside.
