Our Councilwoman in the news - again
#1
Today's Tribune's headline is:

Police probe Naeole vs. Jacobson flap

http://www.hawaiitribune-herald.com/arti...ocal01.txt

Yesterday's Hunter Bishop.com got the scoop:

Naeole investigated for alleged threat

http://hunterbishop.com/journal/2008/8/8...hreat.html

What is quite interesting is that Emily Naeole's legislative aid Tiffany Edwards-Hunt quotes Emily as telling people not to vote for Bob Jacobson..... then proceeds to accuse council members of trying to get people to not vote for Emily..... and then attributes it all to petty electioneering.

What came first? The chicken or the egg?

Day by day the District 5 office stays interesting......

I find her to be an embarassment.

Has anyone else noticed that this is her response to everything:
Quote, Reached at her Council office this morning, Naeole said, “It’s not real. It’s all a lie. People twist words, that’s all I have to say.”

What do we do about Emily Naeole? We seem to go from one hu-hu to another, and one has to wonder where this is all leading.

I have mixed feelings. On the one hand, I find her very approachable and have had several congenial and informative conversations with her. I really believe that she wants help Puna and make things better. She has a big heart. Her assistant, Tiffany Hunt-Edwards, is a major asset and a person who always responds to constituents questions and concerns.

On the other hand, there seems to be a lack of the organizational abilities and alliance-building that one needs to be an effective Council member. Temperment is a big factor in effectiveness. The Councilwoman has thrown pencils and called another Councilwoman "donkey" during meetings. She has made, then retracted, and then made again serious allegations against a Hawaiian Homelands official. (I lost track of this one and can't remember where things ended.)

It is impossible to get legislation passed without the support of other members. One does not get support by calling names and telling folks to vote against Bob Jacobson, a person who is a natural ally for Puna. When Ms. Naeole has made alliances, they have tended to be with the Hilo faction of the Council, which is not friendly to Puna in my opinion.

So I am just about at the point where the only question for me is which of the Councilwoman's opponents to vote for. Help me out here, Punawebbers. Am I somehow missing the big picture?

Cheers,
Jerry

Jerry,

Because you make real contributions here (and at hunterbishop.com) in your own name, I am compelled to give you an honest reply.
In doing so, I reveal my own hand and may cause one or two red faces.

Your frustration is easy to grasp and you ask, 'who'?

It seems you recognize the need for a member who respects others and can be counted on for civil conduct. This is a legitimate need and IMHO eliminates Safarik for sure, and, IMHO the same would apply to Gumapac.

Do you want someone who has proven they can operate and progress within the processes of County Government? That eliminates Gumapac and Kanimika-Stocksdale.

My vote is going to Naeole. Why? Because she did the right thing on the largest issue this Council term has faced -- she voted no to the so-called 'waste-to-energy' proposal. I promised myself -- not her -- that she earned my vote. So be it.

If you can't vote for Naeole, vote for Joseph.

Thank you, James. I knew I could count on you for your honest take on this. I did not mention the "no" vote on the rubbish incinerator in my list of good things about Ms. Naeole, and it is a big one. I'm glad you mentioned it. I will go to the next forum and see what the candidates have to say. Hopefully, Ms. Naeole will participate.

Cheers,
Jerry

Not so fast here! Why vote for an incumbent elected official with no political skills or vision just because of one vote, especially in light of the fact that she did her best to shoot down the biggest thing to ever come out of Puna, the PCDP, and in doing so demonstrated once again that she has no interest whatsoever in listening to the views of her constituents. She has apparently aligned herself with Higa and Bill Walter of Shipman, neither of whom have any concern for Puna. Ms Naeole is a wonderful woman and an excellent community activist but is simply not up to the task of representing her community in a high stakes political arena. Lets thank the powers that be that Jacobson, Pilago, Ford, Hoffman and Yagong are looking out for our interests at council because our own representative is missing in action. If Puna is ever going to get it's due it won't happen until someone else occupies our council seat, someone who can work with the the other districts, their representatives and the mayor's office and accurately assess the needs and desires of our district.

I've personally had some good conversations with Kale Gumapac, and I think he would make a great choice for our next councilor. What made me start to notice him is that I kept running into him at meeting and events speaking out for stuff that concerns me a lot, like environmental and cultural issues, and positive, sane development in Puna. Like Angel Pilago, he has actively supported these issues for a while, so I beleive it's a matter of true personal conviction, rather than just a way to look good close to election time. James, I respect your opinion and I know you have some perspective from your work with the wheelabrator issue. (Thanks again - by the way). I'm still gathering info and watching all the candidates for this race, and I'm looking forward to the forum on the 19th.

I'm not going to be so fast to prejudge Kale Gumapac's capability to the processes of County Government . I think he has strong potential for county council. There was hope once that Emily would grow into the job. That hasn't happened and it is, I suspect, a big disappointment to a lot of folks, myself included. Kale Gumapac has exhibited an ability to listen and to lead. Working in concert with him on the PCDP Rally was a positive experience. He was clearly able to provide focus to a hastily assembled group of PCDP supporters. He has my attention.

Give Kale Gumapac fair consideration.

Aloha Jeff,

Please note that I did not ask you or anyone else to vote for your current Council member. She will have to deal with you and anyone else on her own.
As it happens, that "just one vote" had more implications for the entire island -- Puna no less than anywhere else -- than anything this Council has voted on, including PCDP (into which I put lots of blood, sweat, and tears).
What I did say was, if you can't vote Naeole, vote Joseph. OK?
