Something that really bothers me!
#11
well take my opinion with a grain of salt.
number one I dont have children, I have kids but their of the four legged variety.

Parents that dont have vocal control over their children should use a leash, too many children today are latch key kids both parents work are tired and god know's t.v and video games are great babysitters, but what comes with this, is you no longer have meals together you dont really talk and heaven forbide you ever follow through with a punishment.
their are no concequinces for actions any more.

so who trains who?

If you look at history, those that are parents now, grew up in a generation that we got our butts beat...I remeber picking my own willow switch to get beat with, and god help you if you got a dry one that broke...

So now we have grown up and swear we wont be like our parents, were going to be our childrens best friends, children only need other children to be their best friends, you are their parent and sometimes they will like you but most of the time they will hate you and eventually leave you, until they get old enough to pull their head out of their ass, and realize their parents were doing the right thing.

So now this upcoming generation, will be so in control, that god forgive the child that aks up, let the beatings begin, this generation will not give up their control to their children, as their parents had. Thus the cycle continues.

I have a 3 year old and let me tell you he can run off in a quick hurry. In an airport, store, parking garage you name it. If I have to let go of his hand and grab a suitcase or something, it wouldn't be unusual for him to wonder off to see the planes or go to a shop. I consider myself more of a hands off parent since we let him play in the yard (enclosed) and we're not too over-bearing and I can't see myself ever using a leash... but it has crossed my mind a time or two and I wouldn't begrudge anyone using one in a busy place like an airport.

Try getting a 3 year old through airport security and you'll probably buy a leash for the kid your next time through!! :-)

When you talk to the parents, what do you suggest as an alternative?

I tell them that it's their responsibility since they brought this child into this world. To give them your undivided attention because of this fact alone. This guy had his kid on the leash at the airport not because he's gonna run off. But it appeared old dad had junior on a leash so he could checkout the "Airport Eye Candy", that was floating all around.

I remember about 8 years back while living near Ala Moana seeing this lady have her child on a leash. She actually pulled the crying boy away from the toys in the store, and proceeded to drag him to the Liquor area of the story. She(mother) screamed & denied child a toy, then dragging him to buy some booze for herself!

For me, there is no excuse in the world to put a child on a leash. I related it to kids being treated like animals! To me it's totally unnecessary to do that. Hell, I have taken my older kids to Rock Concerts & sporting events and never lost track of my kids! We did it when they were small too.`

I never used a leash, but I wouldn't rule it out in all circumstances. The example B.B. posted above demonstrates why some people shouldn't have kids, but I would be very reluctant to otherwise judge someone for using one. I still recall the time I briefly lost my youngest som in a large mall. It scared the holy crap out of me. I couldn't imagine how he could dissapear so quickly. I later found out that when we walked to the other side of a short aisle from him (short as in about six feet) he didn't see us. He was physically only about four feet away but he thought he had been left behind and hauled ass (ran) through the mall. That's how he disappeared so fast. I was thinking abduction. As I said, it scared the holy crap out of me.

I wonder how many of you have had the responsibility of watching a toddler at an airport? Is it better to immobilize the child in a stroller and not allow him to move around? Its physically hard to carry a squirmy child and leaning down to hold his hand is not always comfortable either.

Having a safety line hooked to the child so he can have freedom to move and yet be safe is not maltreatment, it is practical AND responsible.

If you have issues with leashes then you may be letting emotional connections rule your brain instead of thinking about it in a rational and practical manner.

If you think about it with your head and not your emotions, you hopefully will realize that safety lines are as functional for an active child in a public place as a mountain climber who is tethered to his group on a mountain or a tree climber who attachs himself to a tree in case he should slip.

I say, "kudos" to the parent you saw in the airport who put his child's safety and welfare in front of public opinion.
