lava viewing
#1
I was just wondering if there is a better place for lava viewing than the marked path. I have some friends coming into town and wanted to show them the lava flows and was hoping to get a little closer. Any suggestions would be helpful. Mahalo.

You would be trespassing. This is all private land and the County got agreements to do this path. Trespassing here is uncool.
It is not safe to get closer than what they're allowing. They draw a line for a reason. New lava land has been know to fall into the ocean with a big hot splash, very suddenly.

There are tour companies that will take you fairly close by boat.

Bump, Looks like the viewing is going to be good tonight (Thursday). The best and safest viewing is from the county's viewing area. Get there by 8:00 pm.

Greg, What makes it good tonight?

I know that there was a small explosion yesterday morning & Halemaumau & that the ocean entry resurged yesterday after petering out some, but haven't heard anything about today....

I can see the plume from my house. Other indications come from friends who are in the area and call me. The ocean entry does change frequently, but the volume of the plume, and whether the lava is in front of or behind the point are factors. Still...... like the waves at Pohoiki, you never know for sure unless you go down and check em out.

The ocean entry has stopped today. Hope, I live in Black Sands.

ADDED: This link works on our newer comp, but not with our older comp

Betty M on the other forum posted this:
If you can't get that link to work, just go to the Kilauea images page and click on the Aug. 31 video.

No incident at Punalu'lu, just very, very overcast.... everyone was saying it was much more than on Sat.... & looking at the 'black belch' maybe why... (there have been more of these events from Sun- yesterday.... seem to be more at night???)

Wow. We went to Malama Punalu'u Sunday and stopped to look at the vent on the way home. We left just before sunset ... maybe 30 minutes before that timestamp! Darn, wish I had seen it. That's intense.

Thanks Carey!

Carey, I couldn't get your link to work. Was there an incedent or something at the festival?

Wednesday morning: Still no ocean entry at Kalapana.
