Last flight (to California) out of New Orleans.
Oh, now I am distracted. I want the Greek Island beach with the Greek husband! Nice link Damon. Okay got it -scary sharp weird tidepools that you have to visit in the morning, probably. After Gustav, nothing scares me though. Aw, Carey that last trip was so strange. I learned one thing: never entertain on vacation. That was so hectic, and hectic and Hawaii just don't mix. Yes, another trip may be in the offing......and kayaking would be high priority. And high and priority mix well.

Neither of the links were Shipman (they were on the coastal route to Shipman) Here is a link to an aerial photo of Shipman Beach (& you can use the site to look at arial coastline around the islands...):

Hijacking here a little - Relatively good news about Gustav, Glen. Glad you're safe!

shipman beach is about an hour and a half walk. You must time this journey according to the tide. Shipman's Beach is awesome at low tide, but unapproachable at high tide. But there are no tide pools there!
I think the Tide Pools you are talking about are at the end of Beach rd. at the Makuu end. You drive into the jungle for a out 15 minutes, then you notice a place to park your car. Actually three cars can park in stalls. But it is not recommended by me! Just two weeks ago my Japanese wife took a friend from Japan there. Where the parking stalls are is about a 10 minutes walk thru the jungle to the tide pools. So when wife pulled up. She noticed three teenagers in an old white/silver truck there already. These boys followed wife and friend down to tide pool. Then the three boys left, and a few moments later one of them returned and swam again. This kid was the "spotter", those punks broke my passenger window to steal my old iPod mini!!!! What a bunch of losers! Good thing I have insurance, I just had to pay $50.00 deductible for new window. If i didn't have insurance window would have cost me three hundred dollars! These lames steal an old iPod which it's battary is dead! Now they have to look over their collective shoulders now...FOREVER!!! Now I'm gonna take out my old trusty "Framer's Hammer",and wait for the truck at the tide pools![!] ----------- have a great diet. Thank you. No one else in Puna cares if I live or die. But go over five comments and BAM! But I figure since I survived Gustav I am entitled. I actually was having one HELL of a time...I even met the mayor unexpectedly and helped his bodyguard shoplift. I was going to stay for Gustav (fear and excitement), but my older siblings (I have four) would not hear of it...that and the very scary television ("You are going to die!") and the silence outside the door (no humans to be seen) kind of spooked me. Continental was wonderful about moving my flight up and gave me Hawaiian Miles, too! I will never take SW again. Getting to the airport was a tremendous challenge. I decided though, that no matter what, I am hanging on to that condo. When I live in Hawaii I am pretty sure that I will need a visit to New Orleans to disturb the peace. You can get too much of a good thing, but I was reminded that it is is hard to get too much of a wild thang...unless that thang is named Gustav.

Thanks for the link to those aerial photos!
I've never timed my trip to Shipman beach, must've got lucky that it was low tide. Yes, it really does have sand! The guard at the Shipman place just behind it always comes over to size up the latest arrivals but just give him a friendly wave. Don't bother parking your car on that awful Beach Rd to get to the tidal pool (which, may I remind you, is only 6ftx3ftx6ft) south of HPP; instead go to the very end of Makuu and turn right, go all the way to the end, park there, and then walk along the lava shore. Your car may still get broken into but there are lots more cars and people there. Of course, best not to leave any valuables in the car at all, don't make it worthwhile for them.

Fire up Google Earth
19Deg35'24"N 154Deg55'32"W - tidepool (you can't see it, but that's the approximate location) 19Deg38'38"N 154Deg58'57"W - Shipman Beach Yes, I know it's probably not a good idea to advertise these things on the internet but the tidepool is hardly a secret (judging by the number of people I see there) and Shipman is a long long walk. |
