East Hawaii firefighters were kept busy over the weekend by at least two house fires.
The first, on Saturday night, destroyed a home in lower Puna.
Eight units responded to the 7:36 p.m. alarm. The first unit arrived at 13-771 Malama St. in Leilani Estates subdivision 12 minutes later.
Firefighters found the one-story, single-family residence engulfed in flames with fire venting through the roof. A detached carport was not damaged.
The fire was brought under control by 8 p.m. by firefighters using water and foam. The blaze was extinguished by 9:30 p.m. Three uniformed police officers controlled traffic at the fire scene.
Damage to the 900-square-foot house owned and occupied by Lareida Buckley was estimated at $140,000. About $15,000 worth of property was spared. Buckley was not injured.

Or you'll be taught how to fly!”
