Gumbo
#1
For those of you who knew him, our much loved pet Beaghe/Corgie died yesterday. He was OLD OLD OLD .. about 16 or 17... and it was expected. Bob buried him in a nice spot in the woods behind our home.

We got Gumbo from the local pound in San Diego about 10 years ago. He was six, well trained and became attached to me the moment we saw one another. He was a loving companion in California and although he didn't like being turned into an outside dog here in Hawaii, he remained a joy in our lives.

This last year he has had all the signs of senility and was miserable. Wice I tried to put him down and out of his misery with excessive pain medications but he rallied each time. Incredible dog! What I gave him would have done ME in! He died quietly on his own curled up in his favorite bed on our lanai.

I guess I am just telling you this so I have an audience to say something nice about him to. I loved this dog as I have never loved another pet. I will miss him but am very glad he is out of his misery.

Thanks for your good thoughts and just for "listening"...

Pam; So sorry for You & Bob. They are so much a part of our lives and leave such a hole when they are gone. He went at home, with the people he loved and none of us can ask for more than that. Dick & Kathy

I'm sorry to hear that Pam. As an owner of dogs and an animal lover in general. I feel your pain! I went years without pets for this reason! I was so afraid of the day that I'd have to bury my beloved pet! WE get so attached to our pets that they become family members to us. I'll be the first to admit too. Even with all my Buddhist background, I still have an extremely hard time dealing with a death of a family pet. Pam, I hope you do better than I do with this kinda stuff?

Remember that my professional background is as an ICU nurse. I resolved my issues with death and dieing a long time ago. I am sad but Gumbo live a realy good life. He was such a part of our lives and he served us well on many levels. His last two years, he was a pain in the butt, unhappy and in pain most of the time, grouchy and demanding. Guess what, I figure my last two years of life I might be that too. I just loved him anyway, knew what was coming, made him as comfortable as possible and remember the GREAT times we had over more than 10 years.

Still, there is a little soft spot... thanks for caring.

I never ceased to be amazed at our animal companions. They are loyal beyond compare. No humans we ever know love us so unconditionally. They are always happy to see us and spend time in our company (and God knows why, 'cause sometimes we don't deserve it).

The biggest drawback being that we only get this intense, intimate, trusting relationship for a few short years. Now THERE'S something science should work on! LOL

Sorry for your loss, Pam & Bob.

I, too, had a beagle/corgi mix named Henry. He came scratching at my back door one night in the middle of a rain storm. I let him in, thinking I would seek out his owners the next day. But he had no collar and was sooo timid. When I swept the floor or made a loud noise he’d cower and shiver as if he’d been abused. I asked around the neighborhood and no one recognized him, so he became part of our family. It took awhile for his fear to leave, but he eventually began to trust us.

He got along great with our golden lab Pharlap, our cats, and with our infant son. For some reason he especially liked me and would eagerly follow me around wherever I went. He’d curl up at my feet when I sat on the couch and at the foot of my bed when I slept. He was a trusted companion and quite protective of our family until his death by heart attack when he was, by our best guess, around 17.

It sounds like Gumbo was just as sweet as Henry. I feel your loss, and wish you the best.
