Lava Tours Reviewed, Climbing Volcanos
#11
Thanks Oink! Good links, just can't see the top from all the roads I've been on. What time of the day did you begin the climb?

I have also seen video of people from the university with live red hot lava in the sea, as well as the video of Shane's dad. Don't think I could do that, but it is fascinating, and glues you to the tube so to speak!

Aloha Kakou,

I figured sooner or later someone would ruffle their feathers again. Its been awhile since I commented I though Id let the dust settle and go about business as usual. For those of you who made it out over the past couple months what a show we've had. As for problems at the ramp they ended months ago. To bring you all up to speed there have been 3 other operations start up & god only knows how many unpermitted charters who have no licenses, permits or insurance to boot with far less experience than us. One has a rubber raft boat need I say more, the other a Parasail boat Id expect to see on a lake, and one a good old twin hulled cat like our smaller boat the LavaKat. Our Crew consists of myself Shane Turpin a 100 Ton Captain, Dan Smith a seasoned boater/fisherman/master mechanic, Scoch Pomroy an excellent waterman/fisherman born of the Islands & has fished Pohoiki since the early 1980's & local waterman guide 100 ton Captain Keoni Erickson, and our operations specialist Kieth Starkey. A team prepared to give you the expereince to a lifetime at the lava ocean entry. After 2 years of running we have taken 1000's of people to view this special occurance with no major injuries or mishaps. To make it more safe & comfortable we now run the larger vessel the LavaKai from Pohoiki. For those who haven't been out yet Im sorry you want to miss out on one of the most influential tours currently running in Hawaii. Heres a link to some recent stuff shot aboard the Lava Kai. Enjoy
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r6SR9yEMjtE

A a professional charter we've been hired by many professionals this year to go the ocean entry including the Nation Geographic, The Discovery Channel, the BBC, Hana Hou, Maui No Ka Oi Magazine, the SF Gate, Seattle Times, La Times, who will be next? will it be you?

We look forward to taking you to experience lava by boat aboard the LavaKai.

Hui Hou see you on the water,

Captain Shane Turpin

As the others who have been on the trip would agree its similar to walking in the park but no smelly sulfur odor. I compare it to an active lava hike which up until recently we all could enjoy venturing out Indiana Jones style across the baron lava lands in search for the Red Hot Magma. Billions of people hiked out on active lava over the past 25 years and of those many rate it as one of the highlights of their life. Now that the flows are inaccessible this is a way you can still experience this rare natural wonder.

Cool video Shane! Are the spirals of water spouts or just steam or clouds? The music was wayyyy good too!

I have been on the boat with Shane. He does a top notch job. Having read the article that precipitated this topic - the author is bit over the top IMHO...

As to safety and Capt. Shane:

I work(ed - still own and act as ceo of the company) in the industry operating half a dozen coast guard certified boats, consequently I am very judgmental about other operators.

Shane is top notch, knows his stuff and provides an excellent once in a lifetime kind of tour to his guests, I would not hesitate to get onboard his vessel and take what is truly the trip of a lifetime.

Hey Shane - I am interested in a ride. I've hiked to the flows several times but I think it would be pretty cool to see it from the ocean. I didn't see your prices anywhere. There will be 3 of us for sure, maybe a few more. Although I don't officially "live" on the island I have owned land for over 10 years so will that qualify me for kamaina rate Smile

Well at least we know you're a fisherman and don't exaggerate.

I don't have any doubts about the thrills and natural beauty involved. Answer me this please Shane;

Do you expose your passengers to the fumes and particles in the plume?
Do you approach the bench closer than say, 50 yards?

Thanks
