Saddle Road
#1
Has anyone recently traveled Saddle Road? They now have it paved to mile 45. The really bad section around the military bases now has almost 6 inches of new asphalt with center lines and is really smooth going. Only 10 miles of rough road left on the kona side.

It's funny how they stopped paving though right where the sign said "Kohala District".

What's dumb is that the County paved the road for about two years of use. The new Saddle Road is under construction behind PTA and the old road that they resurfaced will be turned over to PTA as a camp road.
I know of may other roads that should have been paved first.[8]
Just another waste of tax dollars.

Actually it wasn't very dumb use of money.I spoke to someone from DPW. They had send someone up there every week to fill in the potholes. The 6(5) phase is only between m.m 35-41.5. It should be completed by the summer of 2009. The last west side segment between m.m 41.5 Mamalahoa highway may take much longer.

Tony,
For what it cost the County in Real money to pave that section, they could send 4 men up there every day for the next two years and fill the pot holes with gold and it won't cost them half the money.
Moreover, they are giving it away to the army next year![?]

I was getting tired of driving on pothole ridden road.So I'm happy that they resurfaced this segment of road. Even though most of it will be bypassed in a year.

I thought that the military paid for the repaving so that they could reclaim the section of the old road that is being given over to them and avoid their equipment passing along the civilian road. So, it was with the help of the other Federal taxpayers that we paid for it.

The existing roadway is maintained by the County of Hawaii. The newly
reconstructed/re-aligned section between m.m 19-35 was financed by
the federal government and the state of Hawaii.

Hawaii County used lapsed fuel tax money (1.9 million) to resurface
the m.m 35-43 section.

If they chip sealed it they could have done it for under a half a million and it would have lasted until the new section behind the camp was opened next year.[8D]
Also, the general population of the island don't even use this road.

I don't know about the general population...but I use it everytime I go over to Kona. It's faster than any other route...and now with the new pavement...it's even quicker.

When is the entire project expected to be completed?
