Interesting video; although like most right wingers, Funbobbasso tends to pick and choose. Thomas Paine also stated that "The world is my country, all mankind are my brethren, and to do good is my religion". Sounds fairly godless/heathen/pinko/commie/hippie/subversive/multicultural to me.

And since many if not most 'conservatives' tend to adhere to nativist, thin-lipped, pinched versions of fundamentalist Christianity, they may be interested in knowing he also believed that "All national institutions of churches, whether Jewish, Christian, or Turkish, appear to me no other than human inventions, set up to terrify and enslave mankind, and monopolize power and profit".

This post is apropos of nothing relating to Puna, and I fully expect Rob to exercise his moderator duties and bounce it, but I'm going to vent anyway.

I am sick up to here with the way the current administration in particular and the right in general have perverted the legal traditions and constitutional precedents of this country.

I'm tired of being told that up is down, black is white, good is bad, and right is wrong and then basically accused of treason when I question this dreck.

I'm tired of the "let's you & him fight" bravado of 5 deferment chickenhawks who courageously send other people's kids into combat, but in their youth chose to serve their country by entering law school or defending Texas from the threat of invasion by Oklahoma.

I'm tired of the glorification of ignorance and stupidity that appears to be ascendant in current political discourse; where educational background, critical thinking skills, and situational flexibility are disparaged and the ability to gut a moose is considered a leadership trait.

Upon further reflection, there are a few things that pertain to Puna. Many here (hard rightists included) are of Social Security age and willingly cash their 'socialist' checks every month. You ought to be aware that without the efforts of 'liberals' in 1935, you'd be at the mercy of your kids, your own savings, or the kindness of strangers for your survival. Congressional Republicans were almost universally opposed to passage of the act and only when forced into an up-or-down voice vote did they acquiesce.

How many of you older Puna residents are benefiting from Medicare? More than a few I'd suspect. Like it or not you can thank 'damn liberals' for that too. When Lyndon Johnson signed the Medicare bill into law in the presence of Harry Truman in 1965, he said: “No longer will older Americans be denied the healing miracle of modern medicine.” On the other hand 'conservative' deity Ronald Reagan viewed it as "the advance wave of socialism". All of you god fearing liberal haters are cordially invited to send your money back.

Women and minorities in Puna probably take the right to vote for granted, no? Well, left to the tender mercies of the reactionary right, you'd still be waiting for the franchise.

How about safer food and work places, clean air & water, the ending of legalized segregation and gender discrimination, the abolition of child labor, paid vacations, sick leave, the 5 day work week? Bet none of you turn any of these benefits and advancements down. Again all of these were strongly opposed by the right.

It would take way more time than I have today to adequately list the improvements to the quality of American life, culture and society that have been brought about by people whose politics were unashamedly liberal. It's a record that deserves not ridicule but celebration.

aloha,
Gene

Of course I have an opinion, they are still free, untaxed and unpunished!

Oh yes the lives of all those around me have IMPROVED so much these last 7 1/2 years, even the financial markets, and wall street are on such a rise, I just can't help myself when it comes to Nov! How's the secret Cheney Energy Policy working for ya now? Remember Enron, oh too far back, how about gas prices?

Where is my burka, just longing to return to the coat hanger days when a woman's body wasn't her own to make choices about. Oh do we give up our vote also? Do blacks go back to slavery? Do we dissolve the freedom of religion, except for evangelists that is? Where is the line drawn?

Hey if it was good enough for Nazi Germany shouldn't it be good enough
for us?? How'd that work out?

The white elite males in charge of our government see the numbers coming. By 2040 the white population of good old USA will be a minority, so they are working so ruthlessly now to set up their dictatorship for that time. You younger ones will be here to see it, to live it, thankfully I won't.

Sign me up for more of the same? Why would one do that? Vote American
Idol for your representation, kill more polar bears and bury the reports, dissolve women's hard won rights, dissolve the rule of law and replace it with gawds law? Keep the ten commandments, and toss the cult doctrine and be wary of creationism.

LOL... well we moved here to be with and help my mother (82), who lives with my sister.... Maybe liberals should raise there kids better.

Medicare in 1965, hmmm not quite so universally opposed
http://www.ssa.gov/history/tally65.html
SENATE YEA NAY NOT VOTING
Democrats 57 7 4
Republicans 13 17 2

HOUSE YEA NAY NOT VOTING
Democrats 237 48 8
Republicans 70 68 2

on the 19th Amendment... that did not pass until the Republicans took over congress...

Also, if you new your history you would know that Oklahoma invades Texas every year... in the resent battle Oklahoma kicked Texas around some.

You talk like conservatives are evil people.... that makes half the people in the USA evil and I don't buy that...
From my short time here in Puna, I have found when you get past all the names and parties and talk specifics there is a bunch of agreement. Now there may be some big disagreements on how to make these things happen.

I have to agree that our political system is broken beyond repair. If you research how many days a year congress actually works. its unbelievable their lucky to work 30 days a year, I used to think I wanted to be a weather man, where else can you only be right half the time and still get paid and not loose your job. But now I think being in congress would be the killer job.

This country is going to hell in a hand basket. This election is one of the most important in history. And it is the scariest.
Since I have been old enough to vote it has been choosing the lesser of two evils Who will do the least amount of damage.

But our political system is broken beyond repair. I dont know the answers to fix it, but the sooner people get pissed off and fed up with the way things are. Change wont happen.

And believe me when I say those of us with engeinuity and creativity will be flocking to hawaii, to get away from this crazy mainland.

I hope that one day Hawaii will break away from the united states, And hope that I will be lucky enough to be accepted, and not sent back with all the other halo's.

I know for myself when we move to puna in Nov. I am leaving Idaho and the mainland behind to embrace the old ways of hawaii. I have much respect for the hawaiin culture, and if I am lucky enough to be adopted into a hawaiin family, I will be grateful.

I have the upmost respect, something I just cant seem to find on the mainland, not that I cant find paradise on the mainland, and I am not blind to the problems in hawaii.

I believe survival is much more predominant in hawaii, not to mention the sence of community.

I am looking forward to the change. for those of you that think that the world in hawaii is bad, it is nothing compared to the mainland.

why do "conservatives" such as the supreme elected bush run this country into more debt than the "liberals"?(under this current regime the national debt has almost doubled to almost $10 trillion)yes it's true, under reagun, bush&bush they created 70% of this national debt.

I suspect that video was a joke, it's so ridiculous.

Tell your Congressman to *listen* to the *Silent* Majority?
The Founding Fathers didn't want separation of state and religion?
No successful society has ever been multicultural? The Roman and Persian empires did fairly well.
At the end he pours water into an intoxicating substance (wine) and ends up with the healthiest drink there is (water). That's supposed to be a suitable analogy of the problem of immigration?

Leftist propaganda!

PS And to pick Thomas Paine of all people! An anti-religion immigrant who thought nothing of becoming a traitor to the country of his birth. Read all about it on Wikipedia.

Hate all the labels we have today. You are branded liberal or conservative if you express a view that might differ from someone else's view. To bad we can't just start over, but we have no real choices, you get to vote for who the major parties decide you should vote for. Personally I'd try everyone currently in office for treason, then hang them and start over with someone who wanted no part of being elected. There is something fundementally wrong when someone spends 6 million dollars to get elected to a job that pays 175,000. a year. Honest person (I don't freaking think so). Bush and his ilk are are so busy with their Vietnam and wasting American lives and Billions a week that our infrastructure falls apart, then the miserable bastard tells us the economy is sound. We practice torture and justify it. Whats really scary is the public accepts it. Water boarding is ok if you are from a different religion. Bah [Sad!]

I full hearted agree with you Dick. Its flipping crazy... Now when you watch the debates and you see these signs that look homemade and brought in by individuals, Surprise their not, their brought and stategically placed through the crowds.
Their all a bunch of liars and crooks. Who in their right mind would want to run this country especially right now. It doesnt matter who gets in office the mess is so bad they will spend the first 4 years trying to undo what the previous president has done whether it be good or bad.
Our president and V.P has made but loads of money while in office not from doing their job but by covering their ass's.
I hope they both get impeached before Nov.
For the first time in the last 5 years they dont want to admit we are in a recession but now the media says we are headed for a depression. I've been saying that for 5 years we are headed for a depression worse then the 1930's. So all of you building giant homes beyond your means you will be the first to fall.
With over 100 trillian dollars of realestate in forclosure, as the gov bails fanny mae and freddie mac out and the banks are failing, what do you think its going to do to the value of your house. with a flooded market of homes and they have tightened up the credit for a mortgage to the point if you dont have a credit score of 780 your not getting a decent mortgage rate. 720 used to be a perfect credit score. hmmm.

I know for myself I am striving to be debt free that includes my house. if you have a mortgage and credit card debt you will not see the light of day.

we have only touched the tip of the ice burg. Things will get alot worse before it gets better, and I am not a pesamist but a realist.

I wish no harm to anyone, but people better get ready for another depression.

Hawaii is very fortuniate Shelter is not out rages at least in puna and lets face it, are we not already seeing people bartering?

people are going to have to find other ways of surviving besides money. I know for myself I will be willing to work for barter whether its food or services. people will adapt, we have the strongest will to survive than any other creature on earth besides the cockroaches. and maybe the termites.lol
