Glad to hear that Hi-Ho is open. It looks like a restaurant that we used to frequent in San Jose. The prices look reasonable. It's great to see more restaurants come up. I hope they are good and that they are able to stay in business.

Here's another plug for Hi-Ho. We tried it out a couple nights ago - it was really good: lots of choices in the buffet, all fresh; friendly & efficient staff; clean and interesting decor. Highly recommended!

edited to add:
We also really like Cafe Pesto, for when we're feeling extravagant;
and Reuben's, for generous portions of the best Mexican food!

Ahhh Henry's. We had an interesting experience there a few years back. It was a carnivore's lair - there were 2 items on the menu - t-bone and porterhouse. What was very interesting was the setting.

The restaurant was in an apartment complex. As we walked up, we noticed a cute Jack Russell by a dumpster. When we entered the restaurant, we found 50's era furnishings and 1 other party already dining. While waiting to be seated, the Jack Russell tiptoed in with a large t-bone (the bone). He/she disappeared under one of the empty tables.

We were finally seated at a nice table, by a window with a nice view of the bay. After a quick dinner selection, we sat and continued to savor the 'environment'. Soon we noticed someone smoking! ... and the Russell jumping - he/she was being tempted by one of the guests with a morsel!!

It was weird and hilarious at the same time. At times, I wondered if we were transported to another country....

Dinner was great. The steaks were wonderful and the sides were excellent. This fact helped us overlook the rest of the experience.

The night ended with our stepping out of the restaurant to notice a cat walking out of the kitchen!!!!!!

We miss Henri's - great steaks and even better price. Their steaks were special cuts from KTA.

Only been to HiHo's 3 times so far Smile Guess you could take that as a recommendation.
Prices have been localized - higher than stated on mainland website, but still OK, especially lunch. Not only good food, but I think they have some sort of music in evening. I find it incredible how many people are working there. As said, service is good. Parking can be a challenge. Another good point, they are open during the "don't eat in Hilo" hours 2-5PM.

We went there for dinner last night after reading about it in BIW.
http://www.bigislandweekly.com/articles/...arts01.txt.

It's very nice by Hilo standards - dim lighting, cloth napkins, and a hostess stand. We ordered and shared four tapas (small plates) and the food was delicious! Scallops, crab cake spoons, steak and onions, Caesar salad, and banana cake = under $45. They did have entrees on the menu for $20-35, but we were anxious to try tapas-style dining here on the island.

I really hope they make it! Jay was out visiting with the customers throughout the night. Service was outstanding; it helps that they have a bus boy to help the lead waitress out.

We had a lovely lunch with friends at the Kiawe Cafe in Volcano. For my money, the best eats in Volcano so far....(I did the Kilauea Lodge but feel that for the price, the food was only average).
