Thanks for all the different views. I am concerned about safety (as any mother would be). I do feel like I have reasearched this topic for the past 3 years. When I looked at property last year I was very interested in what the nighbourhood looked like and who I would be living next to. When I become serious about a property my realtor and I will go and talk to the neighbors and make sure it is a good fit.
About work, I have read many posts about how hard it can be to find work in Hawaii. We are "bringing plenty of cash". It should be enough for at least 1 year of living. But that being said my husband is looking online for a job now and when I was there last year I gave out his resume. He does marble/granite work, doesn't seem to be very big on the Hilo side (and much better on Oahu) but he would be willing to do any work. And by then I will be a midwife, don't really know how profitable this field is but I love it so I don't really care!!!
I did just ask about the the weather but any info on any subject is helpful.

FYI, There are probably more people in two blocks of Kansas City than there are in Fern Acres. You can't compare the two at all.

Kathy, the murder rate in Puna is peanuts compared to here in Kansas City. I will be thrilled to move there where it's so safe as compared to here. Your links showed 4 murders since 2002 (could have been more, I didn't check). Compare that to here where 58 people were killed so far this year and we are on track for a record this year it looks like. You can see the stats here: http://blogs.kansascity.com/crime_scene/...y-hom.html
Not trying to get on your case and not trying to make light of what you found, but everything is indeed relative.

well, renea, if you plan to stay more than the one year you have money for, and your husband does high end marble and granite work, which would be appreciated on the west side, you might consider renting on the west side and letting him find work.

Based on your likes, I think you would enjoy windward North Kohala and the Honoka'a area, possibly Waimea. All three have hospitals, two of them quite small. Honoka'a has a very nice health clinic.

Women have babies all over the island. If insurance doesn't cover midwifery, and I don't know it it does, then you may need to find clients who can afford to pay for their own birthing.

Yes, the rent is lower on the east side, but the higher wages more than compensate for the discrepancy, if you can get them.

We had money for one year as well, and we used it.

Year Two was a brutal wake-up call.
