We do really want Obama as our President?
#1
I know I'm opening a can of worms, especially in a predominantly democratic state but I'm telling you...the thought of Obama being our president scares me to death. #1, he has no experience. #2, these social programs sound great but they cost billions and trillions of dollars. Where do you think this money will come from??? I personally feel that too much money already comes out of my paychecks, making it hard to make ends meet. #3 Based on past experience, once we implement government assisted programs, you will NEVER get them reversed. As soon as you try to take away from these programs..people scream and cry. As I watch the polls...I'm glad that I am Hawaii where I can grow the majority of my food and no longer have to worry about heating my home. We are two aging hippies who have always wanted to be self-substaining. In view of the potential increase in taxation, I think we made the right move! Think about it before you vote. Obama says all the right things but WHO'S going to pay for these changes...WE ARE. The Government has been functioning in the deficit for how many years already? We can clearly see this in Hawaii. For this population, we should have WAY more health facilities and physicians than we do!!! Everyone is concerned about their health care needs yet continues to vote for a more socialistic government. There are zero Assistive Living facilities and only one smaller sized hospital for over 60,000 people! I don't care what party it actually involves..we need to vote in the party which will have the interest of the AVERAGE citizen in mind! Don't wait until it's too late. Seriously look at both candidates and then head for the election booths. If we choose to have socialism, then don't complain because you have inadequate health care and lots of deductions from your paycheck! The headlines have recently shown how doctors are rapidly leaving the islands and many of you are aware that I have been unable to find a nursing job since my arrival. We need to take care of ourselves..not have the government step in and FORCE us to follow their agenda. Linda Bowman

Says you, me and maybe 5 other Puna-webers, ha ha.

Making a comment like that here, is analogous to telling the Pope that there is no god. Regardless if it is true or not, it wont make you friends in the Vatican.
In your search to understand why people will welcome the change to socialism and government dependence via government domination, read the book “The True Believer” by Eric Hoffer. I think no other person has nailed the psyche of those that will destroy what has made America great.
quote:

Hoffer argues that mass movements such as Fascism and Communism spread by promising a glorious future. To be successful, these mass movements need the adherents to be willing to sacrifice themselves and others for the future goals. To do so, mass movements need to devalue both the past and the present. Mass movements appeal to frustrated people who are dissatisfied with their current state, but are capable of a strong belief in the future. As well, mass movements appeal to people who want to escape a flawed self by creating an imaginary self and joining a collective whole. Some categories of people who may be attracted to mass movements include poor people, misfits, and people who feel thwarted in their endeavors. Hoffer quotes extensively from leaders of the Nazi and Communist parties in the early part of the 20th Century, to demonstrate, among other things, that they were competing for adherents from the same pool of people predisposed to support mass movements. Despite the two parties' fierce antagonism, they were more likely to gain recruits from their opposing party than from moderates with no affiliation to either.

Alexis de Tocqueville had it right when he said,
“The American Republic will endure until the day Congress discovers that it can bribe the public with the public's money."
We are there now, and short of a revolution, I see no way out of it.

and before anyone jumps to conclusion that I am an Obama supporter.
I think this is the scariest election I have ever voted for. It has always been choosing the lesser of two evils. since I have been old enough to vote.
Its time for change, but to what extent.
I personally think that we need an independent pres. divide the house and senate, but keep the pres. independent so he or she can take the best ideas from both sides. and implement them.
