Hey! I didn't mean to sound "political" and I believe everybody should vote for whoever they believe in. I actually was a Pilagro fan until that meeting I mentioned in my post.

John,

I do know Angel Pilago. He is an outstanding individual.

Wishy washy?
One thing I have noticed in this campaign is his hesitancy to say things that may sound like he is just saying them to get votes.
He doesn't try to impress with recitation of facts and figures.

Angel's specific achievements have not been wishy washy -- Council leadership: as Chair of the Planning Committee he did the hard work in adopting a General Plan and getting the Community Development Plans going. And, of course, there is his leadership in successfully fighting all the way to the US Supreme Court for shore line access in Hawaii; and, his decorations for heroism and valor in battle. No, nothing wishy washy there -- neither is there any pandering or hesitation when decisive action is needed.

You know what chili cook-offs and politicians have in common? They both produce a lot of hot, smelly air Smile

I have seen a few ways of raising money in a chili cook-off and it works every time

1] Charge a small, I repeat “small” entry fee for the contestants say around $10.00 or $20.00 this will give you money for prizes and overhead cost. This money should be submitted ahead of time so that the committee knows what it is working with. With a low entry fee you will have plenty of contestants. The more competitor you have the more the fun.

2] A required amount of chili must be made by the contestants say two or three gallons or so. One container goes to the honored and celebrity judges for tasting. The rest is put out for the chili heads that come to the competition.

3] The chilli is not dished out until the judging is over and there should be a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place awarded by the judges. That will be the chili that will be sold out first. The way that the chili is sold is by tickets. Each ticket is bought for say $1.00 and that entitles you to a three oz cup of the chili of your choice per ticket from any contestant. All proceeds go to the non profit organizers.

4] while the chile is being prepared by the contestants there is an on going raffle for prizes that have been donated to the event, such as a dinner for two at the Black Rock and so on. Raffle tickets are sold for say $.50 each weeks ahead of time and you have to be present to win.

These are just a few things that I have seen in the past and I’m sure that there are plenty of other ways to generate a good amount of monies for the non profit fund. Hey I’m starting to get a little excited here and will volunteer some time to make this work. We could promote all of the local food establishments to participate and I’m sure that we could get the winning recipes published in all of our local news media. How about the fire department, police department, Sure Foundation Church and so forth as competitors, bet they would sign up.

A plaque for the winner and the bragging rights will do just fine.

Winning Contestant(s) must make recipes available [Wink]

I'd love to see a "Strictly Grown on Big Island Category" [Wink]

Believe it or not... I've actually had a decent vegetarian chilli.
