mobile broadband
#1
Sorry if this has been asked before but does anyone know if mobile broadband has reached Puna or more specifically HPP?

Mobile broadband is where you stick a small device into your laptop and you get high speed internet via the cell phone signals. It works surprisingly well.

It would be handy because in my area there's still no ADSL or cable broadband.

Thanks

Just called AT&T, they said it should work here. Costs $60 a month for a miserly 1.5GB, and you have to sign up for at least a year. Has anyone tried it?

We use Verizon's, and are in Orchidland. It works, it is slowwwww, and sometimes fades, just like a cell phone, we use it when we are away from home. I do beleive verison will let you try it for a month first, it's about the same price, $59.99 I think.

We also use Verizon Wireless in Orchidland, and our service became much quicker and more dependable once the new tower at Sure Foundation Church went up early this year. Before that, our connection apparently vacillated between the towers in Keaau and Kurtistown (we're on the west side of Orchidland Drive) and the signal sometimes faded or quit entirely.

It's not as fast as regular land-line broadband but it's not bad, up to 1.9 megabits per second in spikes but usually around 500-700 Mbps on steady downloads (divide by 8 to get megabytes/sec.). Our service costs about $60/mo. for unlimited use.

I have had verizon for a year now, I reside in Eden Roc and it does work well, although you will get bumped (Dropped) sometimes but as fast as you are bumped is as fast as you can get back on again. They will give you 30 days to try it and return it if you are not satisfied. They have provided great Customer Service also.

I have AT&T Wireless for my cell service and it seems to work pretty good in Eden Roc. I am interested in getting wireless broadband as well. Is there a package deal for the cell phone and broadband together?

Oops, wait, there must be something wrong with my math. That's KILObits per second, not megabits. Anyway, it takes 30 seconds or so to download a 5 MB file.

I use AWS wireless in HPP on 5th. They have several relays in the subdivision. One's on Beach and another is on 4th plus they have a few more scattered through the subdivision...Priced from $29.95 a month for 128 up and down to $70.00 a month for I believe to be 1.5 down. Thats with a 12 month commitment. The down side is that it's line of sight. If your in a valley or have lots of tress around your house it cuts out. Whats nice about it is that they are all over the island and in Honolulu also for people with laptops.
