Yeah we were all pushing papaya... a farmer donated choke loads of papaya, much was donated to the Food Basket & peanut butter ministries & such, but the rest is being offered to passerbys & such.....

Sorry to be a nay-sayer, but for years now it's been the folks with the LEAST number of sign-wavers who get MY vote.
There are few things more infuriating to me than otherwise-sane people, purporting to have my interests and those of my neighbors at heart, leaping up and down in my field of view as I try very hard not to kill them, or anyone else, on our already-ridiculously-dangerous highways.
For me, regardless of candidate they're trying to promote, every single prancin'-around-in-the-downpour sign reads precisely the same: "Candidate-X is not only Dim, but Doesn't Give a Rat's AS$ about Your Safety!"

It's a shame democracy is so messy. Sorry.

Well, since they all "read the same", Malolo, I guess no one will be hurt by the loss of your vote. But, just in case, I'm pretty sure it was that "other" guy.[

This is the first campaign we have ever gotten involved in... One of the reasons why is that throughout the primary, this candidates' campaign cleaned the roadways (11 & 130) rather than sign waving.... I felt that it was much more sane. The sign waving is a tradition that goes "way back" on this island. A quaint custom to many mainlanders, annoying to some. But this is a traditional that many locals expect.
As to why this campaign is now sign waving, it may be that the volunteers no longer wanted to clean up others trash & wanted to sign wave rather than clean the same area of the road with all of the garbage that was tossed out every week, or it could have been the motorist that chucked garbage directly at us... but a change in campaign strategy was made.
I credit This one candidate for at least trying to do something beneficial with his volunteer force, but the campaign needed to increase their visibility & volunteer force & listened to those who were willing to put in the front line time.....
But at least for a few months, sections of 11 & 130 got a cleaner as some volunteers were willing to clean up the roads....

This is also a popular political campaign custom in Japan. Coincidence?
Believe it or not, it's even more annoying in Japan. (Just got back :-)

I'm torn between appreciation of the effort involved in the sign waving and not liking the distraction. I feel like the distraction is unsafe. It feels rude not to look and respond, and yet I should keep my eyes on what I'm doing.
Bottom line, my vote won't be gotten from waving, because there is no message other than the candidate's name and a bunch of people saying vote this way.
Most likely to get my vote is promotion that includes information about something the candidate supports that I'd approve of.
