shack!
#1
What would the legal route be to have an old (very) dilapited and abandoned shack that has all of a sudden become a major eyesore as I have cleaned out the blocking waiwe. Absentee owner probably doesn't know it exists. It isn't on the map so was never permitted, and is probably 800sf. None of it would have any value.
Anyone run into this, what recourse do I have? Thanks.

Gee, it would be a shame if "vandals" happened along and torched it! ;^)

The legal route would be to call the Building Department and report an illegal structure. Or ask the owner if you can remove it or if he will remove it.

"I like yard sales," he said. "All true survivalists like yard sales."

Civility which creates a clean memory (consciousness) is key to happiness and good health; no matter the other person's perception.

I would look up the tmk on the county website:
http://www.hawaiipropertytax.com/Account...nu=PSearch&submnu=Account&cookieCheck=1

If you don't know what their TMK is, type in yours, then click on the map; it'll give you the surrounding TMK's.

Then, contact the person and ask them if you can have it removed. Then, place an ad, here or on craigslist "Free building materials, you disassemble." You'd be surprised about what others' consider valuable. One mans junk.......

If they give you permission to have it removed and no one replies to the ad, I can get some people together to help you remove it sometime.

This actually happened last year here; Names changed:

Henry and Lehua on road 26 built their temp house practically on the road. A.O. called the county to report it because they jog by it everyday and couldn't stand it. County sent Dept of Health Inspector Luis. Henry knows Luis. Luis told Henry it was A.O. Lehua not happy, Henry need Lehua happy. Very bad for A.O.

This shack isn't on the road but right beside my main clearing in front of my house (we're flag lots). I'm writing the owner now. But as far as having someone come in and take it down, that could make a problem if the owner bitched. Hotcatz has the right idea, thanks for the suggestions.
