HAWAI'I: a US state or a sovereign nation
#21
Actually, a STATE is a sovereign territory.

Canada is a state, Russia is a state. China is a state, Hawaii is a state, California and Texas are states.
The United States is Fifty states that are bound together under a constitution like the E.U..

Each state within the U.S. has it's own laws. We have let the Federal level of government have so much power over the last 150 years that we now think of the UNITED S T A T E S as a State, or Country, but in actuality it is fifty sovereign countries (states) united by a constitution.

Can you dig it?

I thought that ceased being true in 1865 as a result of The War of Northern Aggression.

The Civil War decided if a state could leave the union, nothing more. The states have some rights (although less rights year by year).

There may be more constructive ways to look at cultural identity. Here is one aspect that is one well worth considering.

I think the subject of the Hawaiian Kingdom is an interesting one. The most interesting part to me is why it is an issue at all. Surely the US took over the islands, and will never give them back. As others have said the military is too entrenched here. But, and this is the crux of my thinking, the Hawaiians have more money and land, here in Hawaii, than anyone else. It is all held by Kam Schools. If they wanted to they could establish Hawaiian communities and Hawaiian business, and pretty much make the whole thing a non-issue. As an example, when Kam Schools bought the Hamakua coast they didn't even lift a finger for their own people. Imagine all that land being lived on, farmed, and administered by Hawaiians. With entire communities living their own lifestyle, working in a manner suitable to their nature, and essentially having an economy of their own. The Hawaiians could be living, and raising their children, with a sense of self worth and dignity that I believe white man stripped them of so many years ago. It seems so simple, and grand when you think how much land, and money, Kam Schools has. They could start a revolution without firing a shot, without anyones permission, no votes, just because they want to. But like all refugees the Hawaiians are pawns, and will never find justice through the system that has harmed them so greatly in the first place, and of which, for reasons I can not figure, Kam Schools whole heartedly condones.

Does the Republic of Georgia have the right to break way from Russia? or does Kosovo or Montenegro deserve their independence? Seems a very similar to me...if the current administration can make a case for their sovereignty why not Hawaii's? Hawaii would seem to have more of a claim than they do?
Maybe Hawaiians could at least trademark hula or parts of the Hawaiian culture like the aborigines have done...or make like Fiji?

The biggest problem you have with Hawaii breaking away from the USA is that most of the "Hawaiians" (people that live in Hawaii) don't want to break away.

In Georgia, a vast majority want to get away from Russia.

beside, do you really want to learn Chinese?

supposedly, there is another trust out there other than KSBE that is said to be worth close to a trillion dollars. the monies are said to be held at the vatican. a particular sovereignty movement group has a leader claiming to be the heir apparent. he has plans to set up the "kingdom's" capital city in/on kaua'i. he also plans to allot parcels to the kanaka maoli set at 12500sqft per person and will let them choose the property according to as needed basis. there will not be any type of mortgage. bye bye anyone who "owns" anything.

i do not belong to any particular movement and do not agree with this person's intended policies. most of the other movements/groups want full independence. if the kanaka maoli truly knew what these peoples' plans were, there'd be cause for a civil war.

Haunani-Kay Trask has complex discussion of this in her writings. She refers to "settlers" and "Natives". She caps "Native" because "native" it is a colonial term. She only calls Natives's Hawaiian. And she says if you are a Native to Hawai'i you are "Hawaiian" not "American".... My interpretation of her writings is that if you are one molecule Hawaiian, you are "Hawaiian", not "Settler". I can't find anywhere that she refers to "locals" and she seems to be vague on people brought here as indentured workers. Nor do I know how she treats hanai family who are in a Hawaiian family but are not themselves Hawaiian. Of course, the word "Hawaiian" is an English word, so you are about to offend someone anywhere you go.
