What is it going to take to establish REALISTIC bail/sentencing in Hawaii - some Famous child or some Politicians child - abused?

Remove the guys who have run the state since 1955. Liberalism doesn't work!

I am not sure this is a "liberal/conservative' issue. I think it is an overcrowded jail issue, as all the states face. Even 20 years ago, a person got busted for pot might get three years in jail, and the same time a rapist would get six months. Our priorities are stupid.

We need to punish crimes with victims solidly. We need to get out of the victimless crime issues.

I know you conservatives will want to KILL me, but I still think that if we just decriminalize ALL drugs, up the line to heroin and everything else, then we can regulate it. We can remove the enormous black market, which encourages both the crimes that supports the illegal drug trade and the whole process that uses kids to develop clients. We could clear our prisons of people in jail over drug issues for the most part and have room for those who actually hurt others.

Okay, off my soap box.... sorry

Severe punishment for severe crimes. (=hard labor, throw away the key) No bail. No parole.

pslamont,

You got it. We could improve conditions in our society (and government) in any number of areas if more people got up on that particular soapbox.

If the millions of folks who already know the score would call and demand this kind of change in the laws, it would happen, imho.

How do we get from ridiculous low Bail and Sentencing of sexual predators - to decimalizing drugs?

What the HELL does someone's political affiliation have to do with child abuse?

The question is "Protecting our Children" NOW - it is not a this or that - or a this for that issue!

The Honolulu case is an interesting one. How the heck did someone about to start a 10-year sentence get $100K?
He certainly shouldn't have been given bail, of course he's going to run, especially if he has easy access to money.

Build more jails. Make them pay for themselves - use cheap labor here instead of in the Third World. Then there's no need to let people out on bail because of overcrowding.

Bail bonding is typically 10% of the Bail (ie. a $100k bail only needs $10k, still a chunk of change, but there are also loans that one can take out for the loan.... quite interesting that the state knew that the offender had not appeared on Monday to begin his sentence, knew his car was at the airport, & notified & allowed the offenders wife & child to pick up the car.... possibly the state ALSO was in on this "charade".

The 10 year sentence (most likely 4-6 years served with parole) was made as part of a plea bargain, typical in cases were the victims testimony could cause further danger to the victim, unfortunately this 'keystone cops' type of system let the victim down.... & the offenders family even retrieved his car, with the states' knowledge! (& blessing???). Most likely the bail bondsman will be on the hook for this, along with the victim & the rest of us!

The state could now go after the offenders assets, but given their lack of securing the car, most likely the offenders family has washed his ownership of all assets!
