Punaweb:Changes in latitudes,Changes in attitudes!
#31
Short version-

Three suggestions/requests and a thank you:

1) Please post rather than quitting Punaweb or pulling back and lurking silently; your contributions shape this forum.

2) Please give me feedback about your perception if I am being a pain in butt or otherwise inappropriate here (AlaskaSteven@yahoo.com).

3) Please make the title of the thread a very clear indicator of what that thread is about.

4) Thanks for the opportunity to consciously articulate our thoughts about Punaweb group norms here in this thread's discussion.

Long version-

Establishing and maintaining norms for that which is accepted as appropriate and constructive behavior is indeed significant for any group to be ongoingly cohesive rather than disintegrate.

For example, I appreciate that within the norms for our Punaweb lot there is not an incessant barrage of sexual innuendo and outright lewd vulgarity. In some groups this is more the rule than the exception.

Civility, too, is a virtue which seems widely valued within the norms of Punaweb's community. The rub seems more often to be differing interpretations of what constitutes free discussion and where a style of expression gives offense versus an outright intentional lack of civility (though this, too, has admittedly flared up). Certainly while a healthy and vigorous discussion of matters large and small alike can involve a tension over differences of perspective & opinion, in a constructive discussion it seems to me like the participants all view themselves as members of the same team versus as enemies on opposing sides.

Lin W's comment, more than any other, provokes concern for me:

I'll probably say too much, I usually do. My big mouth has gotten me into trouble my whole life, why change now? I don’t post very often but I did enjoy reading daily, until the past couple of months when it seems the posts have turned to an anti-government, print your own currency, stockpile food, attack dogs, barbed wire and locked gates, arm yourself and shoot anything that moves mentality that I find pathetic and offensive, so I have pretty much quit reading. I scan the topic titles and it’s the same ol’ stuff, day after day. I used to love the newsy posts about local goings on as well as the homesteading and sustainability type threads but now it seems even they rapidly degenerate into the militant survivalist stuff mentioned above. I was particularly heartsick at the brutal post started on Christmas Eve and still running near the top of the forum today. Not the world I want to live in and nothing I would willingly subject myself to via this forum. I had about decided to give it up completely when this thread popped up – hope Rob takes it to heart and makes the changes necessary. Meanwhile, implementing that IGNORE feature might be a very good idea. Aloha.

Reflecting on some of my posts, I feel concern about this observation in large part because I do not want to be part of a problem and perceived as polluting Punaweb, if indeed such is the case. Newbies do tend to stick their foot in the cowpies and track it around behind themselves all unawares, and I am certainly a relative newbie here. Being part of spoiling a good forum for others is not anything I would want to do, intentionally. This thread raises a good opportunity to openly explore the group norms people want to see in Punaweb, within the framework Rob has so kindly provided.

While we know and love the similarities, Puna is not in all ways Shangri-La or Big Rock Candy Mountain. There are issues of crime, potential for a total furball if lava runs across 130, lack of services relative to size and population of the district, jobs and youth opportunity issues, and so on as in many communities (and then some). Newsy posts about local goings on as well as the homesteading and sustainability type threads are great and I enjoy them, too. Seeing more newsy posts about local goings on as well as homesteading & sustainability threads would be wonderful and would serve to emphasize, appropriately, the good and positive aspects of Puna which we all love. This is why I hope those who have indicated they are stepping back and lurking, only, not posting, will start posting frequently again. Rather than ceding the ground to topics and styles of discussion which as not experienced as blessings, please do provide the positive. This will shape the norms here.

For my part, I welcome direct feedback on whether I am being part of the solution or part of the pollution; private messages can reach me at AlaskaSteven@yahoo.com ...Thanks in advance to anyone sending such feedback, whether slings and arrows or hearts and roses -if I hear from my neighbors in Puna they would appreciate it if I just stuck to talking about mosquitoes, or even shut up entirely, then such feedback would be instructive and useful for me to know. In my opinion a good newbie is a humble newbie, responsive to group norms of the community of which he or she aspires to become a constructive part.

A last suggestion I would offer for the possible good of the order is to request folks who are creating a new thread please make the title of the thread a very clear indicator of what that thread is about. It strikes me as being either lazy or a bit of a tease to title a thread so ambiguously everyone has to take the time to click in there just in order to discover what the topic actually is, ...plus which the value of the thread as a source of potentially useful information is reduced when it does not pop up on title keyword searches on a topic. If one's intention is not to fool or bait others into looking in a thread which they would avoid if only they knew what it was actually about, then right up front in the name of the thread please make it as clear as possible what the thread is about. Thanks, to those who title their threads clearly!

Yes, thank you Menehune ... I agree too ...
and for whatever way I am part of the problem, I apologize.

Punaweb topics have depressed me lately.

We are in a recession but I need to have some break from focusing on a grim future.

Crime is around, and that's nothing new when it comes to theft, but the "solutions" now are so full of threats to blow people away, whatever happened to knowing your neighbor and taking sensible precautions instead of talking violence?

I really don't want to read posts about shooting, maiming, or otherwise harming other human beings, hypothetical or real, unless some violence has indeed happened and is news, of which we should be aware. But this "under siege" mentality is driving me away.

Punaweb as I encountered it was a place where newbies could learn about this new place from people who live here. But of late there is less willingness to learn and adapt and a lot of "I'm bringing my values and expectations with me, and screw everyone here if they don't like it, this is America."

While there is free speech, there is a privately hosted community, and I always thought that Punaweb tried to be better (than say Konaweb) by having a collective understanding that it doesn't work to bring mainland ways here and force them on Puna/East Hawai'i. (I don't live in Puna, but I do live in East Hawai'i and consider we all have a commonality.)

I thought Punaweb was a place to learn how not to move here as the "ugly haole mainlander" equivalent to the ugly American that roams the world.

Two years ago, when the economy was booming along, there was more optimism about moving here than maybe is warranted now. Optimism makes for a fun site. This last year there have been more troubles to speak of, less reason to encourage people to come even if they don't have a job or much savings. I have been part of the negativity in that respect.

However, I feel that to encourage people to come if there's a chance they'll end up destitute is not something I'm comfortable with ...

Point being, the tone is bound to be down a little with so many folks hurting, yet we can still be kind to each other.

Lastly, I am not very political and although I can avoid overtly political topics, I hate it when every topic about what's going on gets infused with political diatribes.

I am against using IGNORE as a problem solver. Those not using ignore who I am not ignoring [Big Grin] will quote partially or refer to the comments from ignorees [:p] and there I am seeing only part of the conversation and that's as annoying as reading the annoying posts. Besides which, few if any people here are so bad as to be ignored 100%, at least for me. [Smile]

Thank you for listening Rob.

Changes in latitudes,Changes in attitudes, and conservative slant.
It was not long ago, at least it seems as though, lefts were the ones to gang.
Right wing I may not be, a moderate tis me, though apt to sometimes rant.
But my views that were Right, I then held close and tight, dodging a forum hang.

The pendulum has swung, irritation has sprung, maybe it's gone too far.
Lets try to remember, this last of December, to be fair to all views.
Blunt all those long knives, seek patience in our lives, but sharpened wits' on par
But when it has swung back, please keep fairness on track, kindness should not be news.

A point we should all note, when some that are wrote, at first seem to insult.
Read the words once again, as if by a best friend, assume their best intent.
Then reread them for fun, try and look for a pun, were smiles the sought result?
Humor should lighten life, when stress tends to run rife, it is our best invent.

Puna is very diverse, an asset not a curse, and yes it does lean left.
When tolerant of all, there can't be any wall, blocking thought or reason.
Those of "liberal" view, should be accepting too, of most all of the rest.
Lets try to get along, I'll let james smoke a bong, Relax James I'm teasin.

I just realized why I link so often to my blog... because if I just tell people the story or pictures I'm talking about are on my blog... and they read punaweb a week after I posted it... they would have no idea where to look on my blog.

So a direct link to the article is necessary for future readers of punaweb that might have interest in said topic that I'm "Tricking" grown adults into going to my site.

Heck... if punaweb allowed pictures and videos... wouldn't need the redirect at times.

And dave... PW has a very small percentage of viewers of my blog that come directly from PW. Rob can give you those stats I believe if you need them. My blog is posted on peoples blogrolls across the state...so to even assume that the majority of my viewers come from PW is very ridiculous.

Punaweb is only 1 of about 10 places I post at times now Wink

Hey Damon,

I for one have checked out your Blog a few times, from PW. I have to say that on a couple of occasions I was directed to your home page not the story itself. Was I tricked? yeah probably (you got your hit) but I'm sure worse things have happened to better people. I went there to check out the snake pics and they weren't up yet, checked back and they were up. [8)]

Ok so about now Damon is thinking this is going way to good for a post from Dave M. Oh yeah, stop calling David M "Dave" I'm Dave and he's David. [Big Grin]

Here's the heat.. It bugs me when you jump into a thread and don't read the entire thread up to the point where you comment. You just did it on the snake/snak thread where you commented that the poster should have called the feds, or something, when he had, and it was written in the original post. I think that for someone who wants people to read their Blog you should be more considerate and at least read the original post thoroughly before commenting. I know I've yelled at you, through my computer screen, more than a couple of times for this.

Well I've probably posted more than enough for a while so I'll leave y'all with a couple of thoughts (from a Lurker) Rob always says to "keep it Hawaii" and I have to say that when the topic is about VOG, Cogui/frogs, lava, community, building, lack of building, roads, local politics etc etc.. the discourse is much more civil than others. As well I would apologise in as much as I usually come in flaming from some other debate forum, that has far less civility than PW, and it does take me a couple of posts to settle down.

I wish all you Punawebers Happy New Year.. Aloha

quote: from Pacific Snapper

Posted by Tom Lackey:

If I had well-mannered rats running around my yard they would listen to me and go obtrude upon someone else. But these dirty rats just don’t listen to a word that I say. I have endeavored to be polite and reason with them to proceed to somewhere other than my avocado trees, but they refused so I had to take desperate measures.

I think Rob can follow the advice from the new sheriff in town. This forum is like his private property, and we are all his guests.

The Lack:

Well, Mr/Mrs Snapper,
Everyone that has a grip about the way Punaweb has progressed has had the courtesy not to put a cartouche to any individual except you. Me being the person and the target of your post , I am offended. I have big shoulders and stand behind what ever I say. If faults are “pointed out “ to me about what I post I graciously except them and try not to offend anyone. I simply try and stimulate conversation and if one should find this offensive I believe that, that person should be looking within their own court and not admonishing others. Again if what I post is too provocative, uninspiring, challenging, piquant, then I suggest maybe a chat room with warm and fuzzy people are what you need, there are many out there, and maybe you could even get a set of mouse ears to fortify your membership.

Punaweb is a great venue and has been for a very long time. If anyone wants to dictate their personal way of thinking they will be directly involved in destroying the fabric that Rob birthed with this wonderful sight.

If anyone doesn’t agree with me or what I post that opens up dialogue and stimulates conversation, what more do you want? Or would it be better to just talk about silver bells and cockleshells? The choice is up to you, but I prefer to live life with an open mind and spark some thought and inspirations in others. If puttering in your garden is your thing then tune into that forum and give your emotions a break..

Jon,

I have 166 post and you have 468, I think that you have been around a lot longer than I have, but the people don't like what I'm posting. Newbies are not the problem, subject matter is the problem. The Lack
