Welcome to Puna..

Did you get a three acre lot there? I suggest that you folks get yourself a couple of 100 pound dogs, and make sure they have "Junkyard attitudes". Fern Forest has a lot of people coming there with "sticky fingers". You might wanna see about fencing in your property too!

welcome to you both!

we are new to fern forest as well. just made the 3 weeks mark. got the fully fenced acreage and the dogs as well. no gun yet. there are several neighbors around, but we haven't introduced ourselves. just the friendly wave of the hand for now.

as far as leaving home: well, that depends on the weather and how well mom is feeling. secondly, running errands is an all day affair. mail, the bank, grocery shopping, transfer station and getting water.

there is one thing i learned: set-up/transfer the utilities, if possible, prior to your arrival. took us almost a week for telephone service to start. the gas was okay, but required $100 deposit, not unusual. but, we weren't told that the previous owner would get credit for the gas that was already in the tank and then we would then be charged for that amount. app. $493. electricity $15 new account charge. if you are getting satellite tv with directtv, setup the appt. NOW. there is a huge waiting list. originally, our appt. was scheduled for 1/10/09, but got moved up to 12/30/08. we ordered it the 1st week we were here. some parts of the subdivision, i think, have cable. don't forget internet service, too.

we've learned a lot from this forum and continue to ask questions. found the water spigots, yeehaw! no more paying for water.

Good for you Anita and Mark! Aloha! I know first hand how exciting it is to have your offer on a Hawaiian home accepted. We are moving right now, arrive in Hilo on Monday afternoon (from East Bay). It took us almost a year (started our journey last February) and this group has been a lifeline to us. There are so many helpful people in this group. Ask any questions and I am sure you will get many answers. Almost everyone in Puna Web has made the move or plans to and they all have experience.

Our real estate agent took us to get all of the utilities turned on after our closing. He also has met several contractors at the house in our absense. He is the most service oriented agent we have ever had. He even stops by the house every few days and checks on it for us and he collects mail. When we got a water bill, he even went and PAID it for us. I think you will find the aloha spirit quite remarkable. We have great neighbors too, who watch the house for us.

We heard that getting cable and internet took a long wait, so we tried to get it set up after the closing in November, but they would not book any appointments more than 30 days in advance. They were fantastic about scheuling it later though and they are installing the day after we arrive.

Now that the truck is loaded and most of the work is done, it sure feels good. Just some tidying up and donations to take care of and we are heading West on Monday morning!
