Pahoa Ranked as Top Destination in America & World
#1
I wouldn't believe it if I didn't blog about it myself.

But can anyone figure out why PAHOA of all places is all of a sudden getting these MAJOR rankings by both Travelocity and now American Online?

Sure that ranking wasn't FBI's top ten most wanted?

It must have something to do with tourist traffic through the town on their way to see the lava flowing into the ocean.

This is only a guess but I think it is because people are seeing how cheap real estate is in Puna on the Internet. Don't forget about what Oprah did for Puna as well. Then they want to research the area and they look up on the Internet where the nearest shopping and other resources are and they find that Pahoa is the largest town nearby where they are looking to buy land or a house. So, Pahoa becomes a top destination.

When I look through the MLS listings I see HPP has the lions share of land and homes for sale. I tried to Google things like nearest grocery store to HPP and I came up with three towns Pahoa, Kea'au and Hilo. If you Google map HPP you see that Pahoa is right there. If you Google Pahoa you will many websites showing all the things one might need if one were to move and live there.

My theory might be a stretch but I think it is valid. Your thoughts?

My theory is that they can only keep saying Paris and other popular spots are the top destination in the world for so long. Their role as travel writers is to tell you something you don't know, to point out an attractive spot that most people don't know about. Therefore, Puna.

We really do need to have a little bit of Puna Pride though. I think we need to field an NFL franchise, using Samoans and Tongans and a couple of big Hawaiians for our first team.

AOL's article makes it sound like Pahoa is a beach town and there are beaches all along the coast. There'll be some disappointed beach bunnies. Cocktails on the beach and hula? Where!?

I had to laugh, too. The only safe places to swim around here do not resemble any beaches AOL's readers are likely to be interested in. While it may look attractive from several points of view, Kehena is frequently unsafe for swimming. The cocktails on the beach bit would be somebody at Kehena taking a chug out of a bottle of something cheap or a pull on some herbaceous smoke.

Cheers,
Jerry

LOL. One thing they got right: it's ranked above Gurnee Illinois. (My old stomping grounds.)
