#1
I saw on the news this morning that they are trying to ban pitbulls in hawaii. I didn't hear the details though. Does anyone know anything about this?

sounds like another situation where a few bad apples ruin it for everyone. Why don't they just HAMMER the people with pit bulls that do harm instead of hammering everyone that wants a pit-bull. I had a friend on the mainland that had pit bulls, they were no different than a lab or any other breed during the time I knew him. We seriously need to stop wide spread banning due to a few bad apples.

Reactionary Proposal:
Something happens - legislation proposed - let the angry feeling subside - the proposed legislation dies.

Disagree. Pitbulls have been scaring me for something like 40 years. They are a short fuse dog, and they have to be trained carefully to be safe. Well, in Hawai'i many people own dogs casually, for guard or for hunting or just because a boy needs a dog. They don't train them; they don't control them. If they do train them, it's to be aggressive or to fight. (This is a segment of the population.)

And the way dogs are raised and treated here is a deep part of the culture that can't be fixed at the drop of a hat, so people can talk all they want about personal responsibility and training and it's irrelevant and going to remain irrelevant to the reality here.

So given a society where people acquire dogs with no plans to be responsible dog owners, where dogs are tied up all day, not fed well, not exercised - what a surprise there would be issues deriving from pitbulls, a breed that so easily snaps and when it does attack there is often a dead or maimed child as a result.

as a owner of three pit bulls I'm totally blown away by the idea of a ban. American society has always gone after one breed or another. Why? When I was a kid, it was terrible 'German Shepherd' that terrorized the country. That was until america fell in love with a TV show called "Rin tin-tin", a story about a 'German Shepherd' who did amazing things for humans.

After the G.S., then it was the Doberman's turn to catch grief for years as the villain. This was followed by Rotweilers. Now for the past ten years , the American Pit Bull is catching grief. Is it fair? Hardly, in my opinion folks need to do a little research. If they did, they'd find out that the Beagle has more attacks across this great country of ours than the American Pit Bull.

People, wake up and smell the coffee. It's the owners, not the breed!!!! My youngest son, who is now three is safe around my pitbulls even when no one is present! As a matter of fact. My almost 3 yr old female has taken on the job of constantly protecting my youngest boy. Where ever he goes, she is right behind him!!! But believe it or not it's the nature of this breed! I will oppose this bill up and down no matter what!!!!!

Yes, and look at the owners who are not you! Owners plus breed.
And I have been attacked by a pitbull that was owned by a friend of mine and in no way was training her to be aggressive, and we had visited the house before.

btw it would not bother me if there were no Dobermans or Rotweilers around either.
Having had a Doberman straining to attack me in the last week, when I visited my own property, I'm a little sour on them too at the moment.

As for yappy dogs, blech, cannot stand them. Put bark collars on all of them and the world would be a more peaceful place. [:0]

Is there going to be a "blood quantum" involved ? What if my dog is one quarter pit bull?

License them and hold the owner responsible for any damages. If the dog bites someone, its should be assault just as if the owner did it.
And while your at it, you could tax them if they bark at night for no reason. [Smile]

Why own a pitbull terrier?
I have not received a logical or reasonable answer to this question since I've been asking it over 20 years ago.
Yep , you hit a nerve with this one.....
