whatreallyhappened.com had this article on their site today. Another good reason to quit tobacco.

cambridgenetwork.co.uk/news/article/default.aspx?objid=56471

Cambridge University

"Second-hand smoke linked to cognitive impairment

Exposure to second-hand smoke could increase the risk of developing dementia and other forms of cognitive impairment, according to research published by Dr David Llewellyn from the University of Cambridge and his collaborators.

The research, just published in the British Medical Journal, highlighted a 44% increase in risk of cognitive impairment when exposed to high levels of second-hand smoke.

Previous studies identified active smoking as a risk factor for cognitive impairment and dementia. However, this is the first large-scale study to conclude that second-hand smoke exposure could lead to dementia and other neurological problems in adults. (Previous findings suggested that second-hand smoke exposure could impair cognitive development in children and adolescents.)..."

Okay I "quit" two years ago tomorrow (for the fourth or fifth time in my life). This product almost makes me want to start just to see if it works. (Spoken like a true addict!)

I'm not bragging, but I quit 25 years ago when I was smoking two packs a day. I won't brag because it was the hardest thing I've ever done, but it CAN be done.

Just a testimonial.

I quit after a similar scenario to fishboy. All I can add is the rewards of quiting are well worth the trouble.

How do you quit smoking?................Anyway you can ! This device seems promising.

The cost of quiting?............Well, the cost of smoking (1pack/day) is about $150/month (not counting medical costs later)

What a bunch of wusses. Quitting cigs is easy. I got off cigs by dipping copenhagen. Then I got off copenhagen by dipping skoal. Then I got off skoal by chewing redman. Then I got off redman by chewing cigars. Then I got off chewing cigars by smoking cigars. Piece of cake!

Edited cuz I left a step out.

I quit 33 years ago at the tender age of 18 when my father died of lung cancer at age 48 (leaving mom with 7 kids ages ranging from 8 to 21). Dad was a good, hard-working man who loved his family, but in the end his choice to smoke affected all of us profoundly. It was my most important "wake-up call". So glad I quit.

How did I do it? First, didn't drink beer for about a month (yeah, the NCO club didn't card us under-agers back then); then every time I got the urge to smoke, I'd run a mile. The coughing and hacking at the end of my run completely removed any urge to smoke. It worked for me.

It took about a month for the cravings to go away, although I'd occasionally dream about smoking, get mad at myself in my dream for doing it, then wake up relieved that it was just a dream.

It was pretty tough quitting even at a young age; surely it's much more difficult in later stages of life.
