best viewing of meteor shower of Dec. 13
#1
Hi, We are hoping to have a clear night to view the Dec. 13 meteor shower. I was wondering where do folks think the best place to view this is? A friend said up in Volcano at National Park would be best. How would that be different than other places?
thanks for any thoughts, [Smile]

Somewhere along the Saddle Road. I loves me some Saddle Road boy. The elevation is higher and you can pull off the road (be careful) in one of the turnouts and just look up. Not sure if Onizuka is open, but probably. That would be a great place to observe this. Wish I was there.

The Saddle road is very popular for meteor viewing as is the visitor center on Mauna Kea. Basically, anywhere that gets you away from lights and above the usual low-level clouds should work.

Unfortunately, you may not be able to find such a place. The weather forecast is dire. At the moment the MK forecast has possible clear skies on the second half of the night of Dec 13th (i.e., early morning 14th Dec) which is an ideal time as watching meteors in the early hours is always better since the meteors will be brighter.

I'm supposed to be on the summit of MK on the 13th but I'm pretty pessimistic we'll be staying there that long right now - I suspect we'll have problems with fog, ice and possible snow flurries. Still, it's a few days away so things may change.

As for Volcano, it's not the place I'd choose although if the weather is benign and the clouds are very low, it could be a pretty good spot.
