I read this on Damon's blog last night and commented "Utah also ranks at or near the top for prescription drug abuse, antidepressant use and internet porn subscriptions. What’s Hawaii’s secret?"

And what do these areas all have in common?
Nothing! I rest my case.

They all have a lot of wealthy upscale boomer retirees who have time to get "in touch" with themselves and smuggly fill out quality of life polls.

Yeah, 98.845% of all survey are Bullsh1t.

I think what Jay said is true about Wyoming -- lots of gentlemen farmers there, with enormous well-warmed homes. However, I have been there and I can honetly say that people are generally more open and friendly than they are in other areas (that is true for the entire upper corridor of the country, all the way to Chicago).
As for Hawaii, by and large, it is a healthy lifestyle although people face challenges there as well. I think what both places have it common is a rural sensibility. Being in cities makes people crazy. Honolulu doesn't count.

As a current city dweller I'll have to disagree with the statement about cities (to each his own) and as a marketer I will have to agree that surveys and statistics such as these are more or less total crap. But hey, it got people talking!

I know why UTAH is up there as one of the happiest..it has the distinction as the state with the most use of anti-depressants[xx(]. (Don't get me started...)
Oh, Blake already covered that..never mind!

You are right Blake. In PR we call it the "spin". You can produce any kind of results if you ask the questions the right way.
