I’d give it a bit more time before we announce the pull out. It’s possible but hasn’t been decided yet imho . The ferry has engaged in saber rattling before, using the employees as dupes (lay off)

Don't usually like to jump into political fray but, I'm truly sorry, it's just a crying shame[V] This will be a big loss of progress for the state of Hawaii.

What about the IMPACT to all the employees now out of a job or the wasteless expenditure of infrastructure spending.
Once again I am deeply saddened that we allow complaints from a handful of environMENTALists, to cause a halt to progress, because of some perceived threat to animals. Accidents sometimes happen, it's unfortunate for sure but, car accidents by ratio probably kill more people per year than boats kill whales. Should we then banish all cars from the highways as a response? I think not.

Hey I'm all for conservation but it must be done in a responsible reasonable manner. Maybe we should ban all forms of boating, including, fishing boats, cruise ships and the "hypocrites" at the PWF[xx(]

what about the impact... ? I wonder if Lingle or our senate ever considered that when they rolled over on the law? After all, laws are made for a reason, and to have our politicians exempt their pets from the law whenever it suits is the crime here. It would have been so easy for Linda and her gang to say 'follow the law' from the get go, and let the chips fall where they may. But no! favoritism is the rule of thumb this side of the pacific, and the superferry folks were suckers to play into that game. They could have said, 'hey we want to do this right, we want to pass all the hurdles BEFORE we begin service', but no! greed is the basis of the American way.. and greed screwed em all. I am personally very proud of all the parties that have worked so hard to uphold the law. And, like the superferry or not, I think all those that worked so hard to craft the laws of our land should be respected for all that they have done.

The issue over whales is only about 5% of the EIS. The primary portion (80 somewhat %) is about the harbor improvements for the Superferry and the impact of the area such as streets, traffic, etc. The rest is more along the lines of invasive species mitigation. Had the state not had to improve the harbor facility, the EIS would already had been completed.

The flip side is that if a new EIS needs to be done from scratch, the EIS can now include the negative economic impact on the community and potential harm to commerce if the ferry stopped running. Before they had to depend on pre ferry economics and info. Likewise instead of speculating on the enviromental imapct, they have actual info. No longer is it a guess if the HSF will harm whales, they have data to show they have not harmed whales. Also public opinion on Maui has shifted in favor of the ferry.

Word from Maui is that the shut down has devastated the farmers who had been shipping their produce on the ferry.

Yeah, but Young Bros and the airlines are drooling. Plus a bunch of Enviro types will be gainfully(?) employed as long as they can stretch it.

You guys who think it's all a few extreme environmentalists are seriously buying into the propaganda of the Superferry backers. The Superferry was funded by big money associated with the defense industry, not public transportation enthusiasts. Stryker transportation, the key element that was open at first, but then they hid it and denied it.

Big money bought off the Governor and key people to railroad it through, and some of the people said we're not taking this kind of government any more, that essentially takes bribe money to favor projects, whether the bribe is cash or political favor in Washington.

The same people here who are against the opposition because it is "treehugger" are also against government that breaks the law and ignores the people, so if you really looked into why it was fought you might be surprised.

The whales were a valid issue, and one of the only weapons to stop the juggernaut, but the main issue was that our governor ignored our constitution. And AS USUAL in Hawai'i they wave the jobs and other things desirable to some people to get them to feel that the project should have support and is needed whether or not it is illegal.

As long as the people here keep favoring bad development and ill conceived projects just because some jobs are promised, our government's corruption will just use us as willing patsies to support their back room deals.

Wake up, Hawai'i has a corrupt leadership and has had for generations, and defeating the Superferry is a message to the power bloc to play by the constitution.

I think Hawaii is wide awake... they keep voting in the people they want and they get the government they ask for.

Um...I don't think so. The E in EIS stands for ENVIRONMENTAL. This is not a cost/benefit type of analysis. The negative impact on the community and commerce have nothing to do with the natural environment.
