Airstream Trailer for Temp. Housing
#1
Anybody know if we would have a problem with the County if we use an Airstream trailer on our HPP property while building a house? Concerned about zoning regs.

I think the problem is more likely to be with the regulations imposed by some subdivisions. You need to call the airstream a "job site office and security trailer" and the county will then ignore it, but some subdivisions have stricter rules.

Yep. Get a copy of HPP's CC&Rs and read through yourself to see if there's any limits. Typically I believe you've got a year w/ places that have CC&Rs specifically aimed at containers/trailers/temp housing. However, an airstream being on wheels, I don't see how they would enforce anything on you... If they do somehow, you just hook it up and go camp/park it somewhere else for a bit. Carol's advice is good, just avoid any hassle all together by putting the right label on it! It's all about semantics...

Next thing, what do you do with the trailer when you are through with it?? There isn't any place you can really go with it. If you do take it somewhere there isn't any dump stations that I'm aware of on the island. For the cost of the RV ( (unless it's a real "beater")and the shipping of it would go along towards renting someplace close. Just my 1 1/2 cents worth.

yes, there is a dump station in hilo, harper rents rvs also. there is also a person who has several airstreams and rents them for just this purpose, they set them up on your land for a 3 month minimum, run ads frequently in the paper.... we have a carport over ours and use it as a guest house, although one of our kids just moved over and is in it currently... once you are on your own land, you can use your own cesspool for your rv dump....

We have been investigating moving a travel trailer over to live in while we wait for the house here to sell. It would be "guest housing" after that. A 26 foot lightweight trailer will be over $6000 to ship. The people who do rental Airstreams say they just keep fixing and renting them out. So unless yours was totally trashed, I bet you could sell it without a problem. Our thinking is that if we are in a trailer already, when the funds to buy become available, we'd be already at home, so to speak, and could dawdle about as much as we wanted, looking for a place. Every snow storm here makes any housing in Puna sound good. [Smile]

Thanks, guys, for all the suggestions. We'll follow up on your comments. We're still a couple of years from our move but it's great to be able to keep up with the local side on Punaweb!
