Lingle
#1
How did such a blue state end up with a Republican governor?
Wikipedia says Lingle outspent her opponent nearly 20-1 at the last election, is that the reason? Is it likely a Republican will win next time too, or was a lot of this because of her personal popularity?

Personally, I think it was dissatisfaction with the prior Democratic administration. And for a Republican, Lingle is definitely one of the most moderate around.

John's point has some validity, because in 1998 Ben Cayetano barely won his re-election bid over Lingle, who lost her first gubernatorial race by a margin of just over 1 percent.

But it's unclear whether she would have won in 2002 had the Democratic frontrunner not imploded. Honolulu Mayor Jeremy Harris had the Dem nomination locked until his campaign was hit with a flurry of campaign donation violations involving many high-profile companies. He soon bailed, leaving Mazie Hirono as the late front-runner but she failed to get much traction, losing 51-46 percent in the general.

In 2006, the still-disorganized Democrats nominated Randall Iwase to oppose Lingle but he was trounced 62-35 percent.

That being said, I believe the Republicans are going to have their hands full trying to retain the seat in 2010.

LOL.. god forbid that Hawaii have even one member of the other party in power... I mean, the Democrat Party has done so much for Hawaii over the years, why not let them keep doing it.

That gives me another thing to thank soldiers for when I see them. If any military are reading this, on behalf of myself and family, thank you for your service!

The military put Lingle into power? How, a coup?? If you mean by voting, then how come they didn't vote Republican in the other elections (house, senate etc)?

There is a certain segment of the population who hate the military, read the Superferry blog. Much of this came much from UH, to the extent they send out from Oahu, radical anti war types to UHHilo to get the students to refuse to work in a enviroment where some things are "Secret". And it worked, 10mil$ of learning infrastructure, lost!

I am not among that segment. My partner was in the military. However, I do think the military should vote in the jurisdiction of their stated residence -- that is to say, the place that they intend to return to. The law needs to change.
