Blog/Bloggers - Necessary?

Bloggers can write as if it's:

1. A letter to the editor
2. Reporter/Journalist
3. Op Ed writer

There is no one definition that fits a blogger, it's the manner in which they write the piece. So if it's just table talk, it’s a letter to the editor. If it's a journalistic opinion, it's an Op Ed piece. If it's non bias reporting, it's a reporter/journalist. Blogger is what they do; the writings define what they are.

Bob,

Hunter might not consider himself a good "blogger". He's more humble than that and I respect this. What he did was present a forum for good discourse. The value of Hunterbishop.com was the diverse conversation he generated. (his was only one opinion among many).

The problem I have with the two leading bloggers on the Island today is ego. They seem to be too concerned with the number of hits they get rather than any serious discussion. Their biggest issue of the year has been their "blackballing" by the government when it was actually just one beaurocrat's mistake- not government policy.

I appreciate their effort, even if I feel it falls short. All I;m saying is they're keeping the door open until someone more talented comes by.

Have any of you gone back and re-read Menehune's original post? I've read it several times and just can't see anything about it that's critical of "our" bloggers. In fact he/she seems to first question their credibility and then come around and validate them.

The very fact that they seem to take offense takes away from their objectivity. If it's just about "them", I'm not interested.

Cool thing about blogers, they are not the paper of record... to bad you can't get the local paper to take that part of their job seriously.

Obviously you haven't followed my blog real closely.

The Blackblogging of bloggers never became an issue until someone from the Newspapers brought it to us.

It then became the 2009 Lava Tube Award Winning issue of the Year.

I never blogged about much DPW work or issues.

They brought me into this whole fiasco and I simply blogged things as they were happening...

Heck... I didn't even award the issue a Smuck Award.

I've only blogged for 7 months or so... so I can't say what my biggest issue has been.

I myself think it's been the Highway 130 Project as I've blogged well over 100 blogs on that issue alone.

There's been other issues... the Post Office was certainly a bigger issue.

My first year of blogging hasn't come to an end yet.

And 2009 just begun.... [Big Grin]

I never thought Menehune's question was very objective... he simply made some statements and I simply attempted to answer his questions.

It's when other people who were not so informed about things that started up about something just recently that I became a bit pissed... But I can Still Handle things Hopefully.

You have to give Menehune credit... he at least attempted to research it.... I just wanted to know where his research was coming from.

He gave us the Code of Ethics that Journalist fall under... and I simply am asking where that Same Code of Ethics page is for bloggers?

I remember looking at the Code of Ethics and now that I've looked at it again... I can see a lot of it that would never hold for a blogger.

1. Deliberate distortion is never permissible
(yeah right... I deliberate distort things on purpose sometimes)

2. Diligently seek out subjects of news stories to give them the opportunity to respond to allegations of wrongdoing
(I don't have time for that... and I'm not getting paid to do so)

I could go on and on about the COE

But the key thing is... I'm not a member of that society and MOST BLOGGERS AREN'T!

Members of the Society share a dedication to ethical behavior and adopt this code to declare the Society's principles and standards of practice.

Damon,
Thanks for the response, and don't get me wrong; you're getting better. I just think that too much of your work is about you.
The PO incedent for instance. It started out about disability compliance. Right on! That's important.

It somehow devolved into Damon being harrassed by the police. Non issue. They made you delete some pictures that you should have been more stealthy in taking. What should have been an aside, became the focus of the issue.

The FBI directory you've put together is very cool. Keep up the good work in this area.

I would hope my blog is about me! Geez.

I don't blog for others... I blog for my enjoyment.

Hello... If I could put a mirror on my blog I would.

It's my blog.

Question Greg -

As an artist... How do you judge what is good art and bad art?

Good art, no make that successful art, to me, is something that provokes a response or thought. This can be either positive or negative.

By my criteria, your site is definately good art! [8D]

I have been trying to do that mirror thing on mine too so let me know if you figure it out and I will too. LOL and well stated...

At least we're doing and participating and having a good time doing so right?

Bloggers can also provide some very interesting perspective and insight into things that people are not generally exposed to. For example a friends blog I follow that documents her transition from female to male - ya don't see that every day and I am sure his experiences will help struggling in familiar situations.

My own "escape" blog was a way for me to document our experiences and resources for a major move and lifestyle change. It was also a way to share these things with friends and family that might be interested. If others stumbled upon it and it helps them in any way then great. Most everything I blog about is another way to communicate with friends or to just talk about things that interest me. It becomes a form of social networking as well and I have met people I now call friend as a result.

Anyway happy discussing and debating folks!

Greg, I assume you are taking a pot shot at yours truly here ? The blackballing issue literally fell into my lap. I didn't ask to be blackballed either. When I became aware of it I wasn't going to ignore blogging about it. On top of that I haven't only blogged about that issue. There is a lot more to The Kona Blog than Noelani blackballing us bloggers.

I disagree that that blackballing directive was one mistake of a bureaucrat county employee. It was a calculated move to deny the public any transparency and accountability in regards to how the DPW operates.
