what a great idea, only negative is heating the oven (550 degrees) for about an hour, I cringe at the thought of the Helco bill [V]

As I posted once before the Pizza on the BI is right in our kitchen.
No need to pre heat the oven at 500* for an hour.
Plus we make a few pizzas and freeze them for future consumption.
It does loose texture but the taste is still there.
What ever the cost it beats the crap they sell around here.
I guess one thing I do miss here is NYC pizza.[:I]

You can get a grill stone for the grill or do pizza directly on the grill, it is very easy. Aside from that if you have a propane oven, 500 degrees is not costly and it also does not take too long to get it that hot. In summer however, I always do it outside. Wood burning oven is best. I had one in IL and am building one here. I can get it up to 800 degrees in the wood burning oven and that is even better. The heat is essential for making crispy crust that is still slightly chewy inside. BTW, the LA times recipe has sugar in it and that makes the yeast rise faster, so this is a thicker chewier crust than some recipes.

Does anybody know if anyone in Hilo or Puna sells refrigerated fresh pizza dough? We used to buy the dough from a neighborhood bakery and then make our own pizzas for a pretty quick supper. I just don't have the time to make my own dough anymore.

I'm with csgray. Until an answer comes through on the pizza dough, try using quality English Muffins in a toaster oven with your favorite toppings and you'll have something tastier and cheaper than just about anything this island has to offer. By the way, anyone know where I can buy frozen ravioli???

I have not seen frozen ravioli anywhere here. Costco and Safeway have various fresh raviolis on the shelf.

I got a big bag of frozen 4 cheese ravioli at the KTA. They were edible but not as good as the Rising Moon frozen ravioli sold at most of the natural food stores. They're spendy unless they are on sale, but really tasty.

We bought a kitchen aid mixer for ourselves this past Christmas. It came with a pizza dough recipe that says let rise for a hour, well I can never wait that long so after a half hour I use it. Works out fine and I run the oven at 400, which lately feels pretty good in the house. As a matter of fact if I didn't have a big pot of split pea soup in the slow cooker I would make a pizza right now.
