Okay Carey, spill-what's happening around the island on Earth Day?
I know that on Oahu, the Kokua Festival will be taking place on Earth Day weekend April 19th-20th. According to their website it looks like a fun & educational experience with feature artist such as Jack Johnson, Dave Mathews, Tim Reynolds and more...

Post Week UPDATE:At the Oceans Day event, our booth won a signed lithograph for "Most Inter-active" - I still have red, yellow, green & purple fingers.... but it was a fun time PLUS it was really great to see some of the PW'ers there! (even ones without kids!)
Hope to see everyone next year at one of these great events!
Activities start this Sunday... anyone & everyone is invited to come to 4 Mile Beach for "Dive for Earth Day" - beachcombers & divers alike are welcomed & needed to help clean up this much used shoreline.

Sunday April 19th - 10: - 1:30 - I am coordinating the "Dive into Earth Day" Beach cleanup at 4 Mile - James Kealoha Beach (Hilo - across from Seaside) Nautilus Dive is sponsoring - Contact Bill at Nautilus if you want to be a part of the UW cleanup.

Saturday April 25th Oceans Day at the PACRC Facility on Kalanianaole - the big white tents on the Puna side of the Hilo Harbor - Lots of activities for the kids!
All of these events are free!

Does anyone want to spend some time on TODAY Sunday April 19, 2009, down at James Kealoha Beach park (4 Mile - the park that has the 4 brand new concrete pillars for ???)
I am coordinated a cleanup with a couple of groups, to clean shoreline & underwater debris... 10am -2 pm
Any & all help is greatly appreciated

I want to thank the PW'ers who came out EARLY this morning to help with the clean up
MAHALO Noel & paMELLA! (First full day of her vacation here & she spent it cleaning garbage off of the shoreline!)
We had 20 people all together, with 8 divers in the water. We filled 4 "potato pickin' bins (aka: large mortar bins) with recyclable glass, one bin with mixed recyclables, one bin of HI5 recyclables, 5 forty-gallon trash bags of garbage, 2 batteries, 1 cell phone, 1 car radio, 1 car wiring harness, 20 lead sinkers and a tire, all from the shoreline & the 4 Mile break bay!
As always, there was lots more to be picked up, and hope to see more out next fall for our next clean up!

Carey when is the next beach cleanup scheduled? Thank you so much for your stewardship.
I am so conflicted about the professed sacredness of the land/ocean and the utter and complete disrespect toward both of them as it relates to the litter and just plain garbage that is placed on/in this home of ours. Can someone explain why this happens here?

The International Coastal Cleanup at 4 Mile will be on Sept. 20 - most likely... this is not confirmed (the normal ICC date is the 3rd Saturday of Sept, but Sundays are best for our underwater cleanup crew)
Why litter & garbage dumping happens here, and everywhere else that I know of, from someone who has done some research, but no expert:
For generations, waste disposal was not a big issue... I am from Chicago, one of the first cities that had to a major overhaul of how waste was disposed of. Locks were placed on the Chicago River over 100 years ago to change the direction of the river (and waste) flow, after contaminated water killed a number of residents.
Until waste creates a real, visible hazard, humans are slow to spend time, effort & money to resolve the issue. This island has a lot of land & a lot of fresh water to cleanse & dilute the problems of waste... so most people are very complacent.
Many people do not acknowledge that their actions create harm. Many people will blame industry for polluting, but do not realize that most households release chemicals into the environment that no industry would be allowed to untreated. I have found it amazing to hear people go on about plastic dumping, meanwhile they think nothing of flicking a filtered cigarette butt on the ground.... a long lasting plastic with a whole slew of tarry chemicals entrapped inside.
