Earth Day 2008

I've been pretty neutral about the GMO thing for years, as I hate to see any knowledge repressed--but the actions of the big GMO companies are completely indefensible. Imagine I'm growing heirloom tomatoes and my neighbor grows GMO tomatoes. They cross pollinate and my tomatoes pick up a patent GMO gene. Under the way the courts have been interpreting the intellectual property law, I've got to quit growing the heirloom tomatoes or pay royalites--in spite of the fact that I might claim my tomatoes were "contaminated."

The GMO issue isn't so much about GMO issues, but abuse of big money power. And abuse it is.

The GMO issue is about people being scared of new technology and trying to stop it because they don't understand it.

If you have any real examples of GMO companies trying to rip off farmers then let's see them.

Yep, JWFITZ, you are proving that there cannot be informed debate on any subject... you set there and proclaim that have the populatiuon is not intelligent enough to debate. You might want to rethink your opinion of people, as so far, the majority have been right about the dooms day predictions.

As for the 100 years we don't have... well you are in good company with people that have predicted incorrectly over the last 1000 years or so.

on GMO, were you as opposed to the grafting and cross pollination to create new plants as you are to the GMO? if not why not?

I have read about that case before. It is my opinion that both parties are partially at fault. The farmer knew he had he modified seeds and Monsanto knew that controlling seeds is nearly impossible. Problem is... Monsanto has more money to fight this issue than the farmer...

That link is over 5 years old. The farmer in question was found to have 95% GMO in his crop, yet refused to pay for it.
Of course the company will sue. People don't have to use GMO, but if they choose to then they do have to pay!
95% doesn't happen by accident.

Actually, because by and large I've lost confidence in the interest of some towards meaningful discourse, I think I'll try a new tactic. The "evidence" thing hasn't proven to be too effective. This new tactic would be to simply make assertions and walk away. It saves me a great deal of time formulating a thoughtful position and I get the additional benefit of not having to bother to sort through contrary evidence nor trouble myself with conflicting views. If I can throw in a snipe or drag the conversation out on a confrontation tangent it's probably a good trick too. All in all I think if I start demanding the utmost in intellectual integrity from others but completely ignore the troubles an informed idea might create for me personally--I'll have a lot more time on my hands free for constructive pursuits, like reading more stuff I know I'll already agree with before I pick it up. As long as the words aren't too long and there's plenty of pictures.

Good idea.
Assume the best and ask questions.

LOL... yep that tactic worked well in the 70's and seems to be going strong today...
