Anyone Feeling Sick???
#61
When we lived in the Pacific Northwest I had several health care practitioners tell me that health issues related to Vitamin D deficiencies were quite common, especially for those who worked in offices and other indoor environments. These were people who were tops in their fields, including one of the best infectious disease Dr.s on the west coast.

It's true, vitamin D deficiencies are more common than many believe. I myself suffer from a diagnosed chronic condition related to vitamin D. Unfortunately, it's important to add that any study I've ever read concerning the issue indicates that oral supplementation of vitamin D is very minimally effective as very little is effectively utilized and high levels of free vitamin D in the blood stream can create toxic effects. I think the evidence would suggest that short of absorption type D compounds like "calcipotriene" or its ilk, going out in the sun is about the only real option. Probably not a good idea at any rate to just cram down a lot of pills.

The max recommended daily intake level for vitamin D is 50 micro grams, so I wonder what sort of
dose a vitamin D supplement would have. 1 gram is 50 years worth!

Anyone who lives a normal life and eats normal food is wasting money on vitamin supplements,
unless recommended by a doctor - their own doctor, that is, not a web MD.

A friend posted this interview on the flu today on the "sustainability" site. I post it here because I found it very informative and I hope it's helpful.

There's a lot of information in that talk and I'd recommend it.

The virus doesn't seem to be spreading exponentially. Is it possible it's about to peak, and then decline?

Here's hoping.

another possible read is john barrys book the Great Influenza. reading from a historical perspective is always an eye opener. this and of course, The Band played On, another great book of a pandemic of sorts, both tell the story of governments reactions and actions (or inactions) that for political reasons, intensified the death toll. I was very sad to see it already happening here, with the big debate on what to call "it" that swine flu was not politically correct, not of focusing on the illness instead of making this a policital toss-ball. our government at work....

Thanks for the 'toon links, Greg.

You know, this all brings to mind the fact that it was once commonly said a black man would only be President in the USA "when pigs fly."

Indeed, 100 days into Obama's presidency, SWINE FLU!

Har, har. Hopefully punnish humor fends off the Piggy Plague.

Hey, has anyone heard from Oink lately? Wink

Since the Obama administration doesn't seem to be in need of social support, the notion that this is hype makes no sense. It should be noted that all governments; friends, neutrals, and enemies alike, are involved in one way or another. In fact, some have gone much farther that the USA in addressing the issue.

On another hopeful note, the CDC has mentioned that the virus is lacking an amino acid, which is hindering its spread. While I have no idea what the heck this means for the long term, it sounds pretty good for now.
