HB 444 Civil Unions
Jon, finally, you said it yourself. As far as you know you were born straight. It is not a choice you made it is just the way you are.

I'm not sure where you’re going with this, I think your confusing the difference between the Right and Requirements. Rights are not so absolute that they can’t have requirements.

Everyone has the RIGHT to marriage. That right can not be taken away by government. Government can not impose restrictions that are in violation of a person's Civil Rights. However, they can place requirements based on the act of that right. Since marriage requires CONTRACTUAL consent, they can place minimum age requirements consistent with age. Under a state law, a person may not be legally capable of giving informed CONTRACTUAL consent under a certain age. But once that minimum legal age is reached, government can not restrict marriage based on age. So an 80 year old can't marry a 10 year old. But if that 10 year old waits until age of consent (lets say 18) and now marries that 88 year old, government CAN NOT stop the marriage because of age since it’s a right and thus protected from arbitrary discrimination or requirements. Just about every legal limitation on marriage is based on issues that do not pertain to marriage but on competency, consent, and health, not on anything to do with race, nationality, sex, age, etc, etc....

Once again, if you have anything that says marriage is NOT A RIGHT, I'll be willing to look at it. But until such time, the US Supreme Court ruled it a Fundamental Right and tough sh*t to those who can't accept it.

OK, I'm curious. In which ruling did the court say marriage was a constitutional right?

I suspect it will be the Supreme Court ruling that said that state laws preventing white people from marrying black people (or other races) were unconstitutional.

Blakeyboy1,

This is a statement that I have no problem with except that you are contradicting yourself. You seem not to be a happy gay guy who can simply go on but rather a gay guy who is more sad and miserable because you can’t have it both ways.

You want everything that straight people have and will remain miserable until you can legally force the rest of the community into submission. You want to redefine the word marriage, you refuse to except the word choice or lifestyle and keep pounding the same old drum......except me.....except me.....except me I’m just like you. Well, no your not. If you call the rest of the world straight that must mean your crooked.

Tom, again I say, what do you care, you won't get it through your head, that being gay has nothing to do with choice. And how does eqaulity for gay people effect you? Your untitled to your opinion but. Please have an open mind, you are talking about a subject that you truly don't have a clue about, you are hung up on a word (marriage). We don't give a crap what you call it we just want the protection of rights as everyother American. It was not that long ago that women and minorities have had to fight for equality, or have you forgotten our history, because we are such a new nation, that was founded on religion persicution, it wasn't that long ago that we had our own civil war that put families against each other to kill. Our American history will always be changing, so pick your battles wisely, if it does not effect you personally why battle it?

I think that people here need to understand and accept that very, very few issues in life have 100% support. There will always be opposing points of view. Attempting to convert the unconvertible is simply an exercise in frustration.

My suggestion is again to "assume the best and ask questions". It is possible to learn from opposing positions, it does require listening.

A few pages back Wayne wrote of tragic instance of a young man that could not deal with his homosexuality and took his own life. This was not a person that felt like he could chose his sexuality and now he is no longer among us. I have seen this more than I care to mention and each time it is as sad and painful as the time before. What a waste. I sincerely hope there is not another kid out there struggling with this and reading some of the comments I am seeing. If you are reading this my friend you are not alone and I promise everything will be okay. And despite some accusations I am a very happy gay man as you will be. If you want to talk please email me (blakeyboy1@gmail.com).

As for the rest I am so over this endless discussion. I will not be checking this topic again or posting so have fun :-). I am sure that I will meet all of you someday soon - both those I agree with and those I do not and I am looking forward to it and hope we can be friends. I know you are good people with a difference of opinion about a few things.

Above all whenever you chose to speak remember that someone is hearing your words so make sure that the things you speak are not words of hate or alienation but rather are words of peace and brotherhood.
