Unfortuneately it's probably the kona side where they already have a presence.

Yep, Kona-side. From Alaska's website:
"Expanded Hawaii Service New Oakland-Maui and Oakland-Kona Nonstop Service... Plus Additional Enhancements to Hawaii Alaska Airlines is once again pleased to be bringing more aloha to Hawaii, and with fares as low as $169 each way, it's time to pack the sunscreen and go. Beginning November 9, 2009, Alaska Airlines will offer four-times-weekly nonstop service between Oakland and Kahului, Maui. Beginning November 10, 2009, Alaska Airlines will offer thrice-weekly nonstop service between Oakland and Kona, on the Big Island of Hawaii." Cool that it's non-stop, though.

I guess it's a pipe dream (in this economy anyway) that somebody would start non-stop service from Hilo to somewhere on the mainland. The lamentably defunct ATA Oakland flight was reported on Punaweb to be mostly full. Of course, it would be better for many of us if a Hilo-mainland flight landed somewhere with better onward connections than Oakland had.
Cheers, Jerry

Speaking of Kona Airport, here's a list of non-Hawaiian non-stop destinations from Kona (courtesy of Wikipedia) :
Air Canada Vancouver [seasonal] Alaska Oakland, Seattle/Tacoma American Los Angeles Delta Los Angeles JAL Tokyo-Narita Kona Air Oakland United Chicago[seasonal], Denver, Los Angeles, San Francisco US Phoenix WestJet Vancouver [seasonal] I'm finding it more and more worthwhile to just rent a car and drive to Kona instead of flying via Honolulu.

We loved the Oakland to Hilo flights from ATA and Aloha. I still prefer to fly non-stop (from Kona) and drive if I am just flying in and out, but to go over there to pick some one up is a real pain. We always tell our guests that if they are flying into Kona that they have to rent a car, we prefer that they rent a car anyway of course.

ATA's OAK <-> ITO rocked. Cheap, nonstop, and it put us where we wanted to be without a three-hour drive. We discovered it just in time for it to go away.
Well Alaska has 2 of 3: Cheap and nonstop to Kailua! Thanks for the info. Could be we're on-island next via Alaska! ArtM |
