I have not jumped in on this thread much, but Damon, I don't see your blog so much as a diary, it seems to me you offer a lot of news on it, not just yaking about everything you do. It maybe the news you want to share, but it isn't
only about you.
I don't consider my blog a diary either, but it is composed of things I am passionate about that I believe others might enjoy reading and seeing. While many events I post about are focused on others, some like the cooking posts are certainly from my own heart. It involves me because it is from my own perspective.
There is lots more to my life than what I post and plenty of it is private. I have another very good friend (also a professional writer)who has a public blog and a private blog that only friends and family can read, hers is most certainly a diary and will be a terrific life history for her 5 year old daughter one day. I feel honored that she invited me to read it. It is one of my favorite blogs.
The great thing about Blogs is you can read 'em or NOT. Nobody is forcing anyone to go to these sites, even though millions of people do every day.
Blogging takes a huge amount of time and effort, especially if you are including photos and video. Nobody would do it if they did not believe that they were doing something for others. Sure, there may be a few people who are trying to cash in on their blogs by advertising, but what they get is a drop in the bucket if you consider an hourly wage. Even Damon, who is obviously prolific at blogging has TWO "day jobs".
I am a published writer, and I get a nice sum for the articles I write, but I give 10X more content away than I get paid for because I share it on my blog. I do it because I love to share, photograph and write. I would do it even if I wasn't getting the traffic I am getting. I would do it if I only had 5 readers. I do it because I love doing it.
Clearly, there are a multitude of different kinds of blogs out there and that is one of the reasons they are so popular. There is something for almost everyone as Kathy said. And for those who don't want to read blogs... that is fine too of course.
That is my two cents.

I can see that, Damon.
Not for me ...
I rarely want to spill about my personal stuff on the net, and if I do I want to be talking directly to a specific person or persons, and getting a reply. I like dialogue.
But I see the appeal, I guess. Great thing about the internet, such a diverse medium, something for everyone.
btw, I have taken plenty of creative writing classes where I was told to keep a journal and/or do a lot of free writing, and I never wanted to or enjoyed it. It's just not my personality type. Others find it liberating. It's all good.
