I have seen bids of around $30,000-$60,000 for grading and ripping just a few acres. Well, I can buy a used D9 around here for about $40,000 and have it shipped to Hawai'i for approximately $5000.
So why can't I just do this myeslf (of course I would get training on driving and maintaining this thing
])? I could get my land torn up, have some fun and then resell (or keep).

I don't know anything about D9s but I say: Do it!
Some things cost so much here, I often think the same myself -
why doesn't some enterprising person do it for cheaper?

$5,000....Right...a Camper is that much, 54,000 pound drill rig more than double, 110,000 pound D9...who gave you that quote? because that is an unbelievable price.

You need to factor in the cost of parts and maintainence which for a D9 would be substantial.

You go right ahead Eightfingers. When you actually check out what it costs if something is to need replacing or breaks on one of those machines, you might just reconsider. They are not just a toy or yard ornament. Costs big bucks to keep em going.

It is beyond me why people would still be considering bulldozers. Don't you see what a mess they leave. Just drive around and look at the lots where they knock stuff over and then just push it into a pile in your yard. Looks like hell! I would not want my yard to look like that. Talk about destroying your piece of paradise. [V] You might want to think of other alternatives.

I have been seeing dozers start come on the market locally lately. if building stays slow for awhile guys with loans on them are going to be trying to get rid of them. and if you got the cash they mite make you a good deal

Also remember that some D-9's have ended up in lava tubes... if your lot has one of those hidden tubes, you would need to have a another D'9 to help you out, if not.... you'll have to hire another D-9 or bury the one you bought/rented.

I have seen bulldozers sitting on lots for months with a track off or some similar sign of mechanical failure. I can only assume that it is really that hard or expensive to fix them.
