I don't like the Seaside at all. There are nicer places to stay.
Yes. Don't pick Kapalua, Makena, Lahaina, etc. Too far away. You could stay around Paia or Haiku. It's very nice on that side -- my favorite.
Maui recently experienced the closing of many B & B's. The locals claim it was political. So your choices are a bit restricted because of that.

We stayed at the Aston Maui Hill four years ago, but it still gets great reviews (see Tripadvisor.com).
I just checked the price for random date of 06/05/09 for two nights, and total price, including taxes for two nights is $354.30.
When we went, they were giving a 50% of the rack rate with the Entertainment discount. If they have a better rate with that, it might be worth buying the Entertainment book.

Oh wait -- I just checked Tripadvisor, and the #1 recommended place for specialty lodging in Kihei is Aikane Oceanfront Vacation Rentals. Their rates are $145.00 per night and are right on ocean.

As Rob said, Priceline is a great option too. You can go to
www.biddingfortravel.com, scroll down to Hawaii-Maui, then click on Maui. It shows what people have gotten for their bids on Priceline. If you click on Maui Hotel List, it shows what is generally awarded in each star level, although they emphasize you may not receive a hotel on that list.

Ignore the TA rankings, because they are skewed and very subjective. (not to put down the #1 place, just the system is flawed)
The reviews are useful, just not the rankings. The reviews have traveler photos of the property, so you can see what actual guests saw, not just the advertising.
Priceline and all is fine for 4 star hotels, but if you're looking two star you have to be careful as there could be something not nice at all in the mix, and if you don't like it after you get it, too bad.
Like I said, the Maui FORUMS, as opposed to the review section, are a real good resource, and one I would turn to if I were looking for lodgings there.

hey carol the seaside is a no fuss it is the sister to the kona seaside hotel cheapest rooms on the island their not that bad kinda like a motel 6 but their parking kinda sux...

I stayed at the Hilo Seaside for a month and enjoyed it very much. It isn't upscale, it doesn't have the resort feel (good or bad it's up to you), it does have a more local feel. The parking stinks.

Thanks for all the info everyone. Due to logistics out of my control I ended up having to take the test in Honolulu, so no trip to Maui. Oh, well.
