Sushi coming!

I saw a "Sushi Coming" sign in the window of the storefront in Malama marketplace where the toy store used to be. So now those who want BK or KFC will be able to go there and those who don't can get sushi. As an old friend used to say "That's why there is Chocolate and Vanilla."

I saw the sushi sign too! Hopefully, it will open soon. haven't really found a place on this side of the island that I like for sushi yet....

Can't imagine it'll be any good, but I'd be willing to give it a try. (Hope I'm wrong.) With 30 years of sushi-eating under my belt, I've come to believe that a mediocre hamburger is better than mediocre sushi. (If you need proof try "Wasabi's" in Kona.)

The best/most cost-effective way to eat sushi on the East side is to make it yourself: Japanese call it "temaki zushi" (translation: "roll your own sushi"). Keep an eye out for the fattiest tuna you can find; get your nori (seaweed), wasabi, etc., mix vinegar with your sticky rice then "roll your own" sushi doob. (I imagine this catch phrase would appeal to the Pahoa crowd.) And if you have any left-overs, then and only then should you use it for bait ;-)

Hey punafish, little side bar, in your sushi eating opinion, what is the best place to get sushi on the Island (Besides making it yourself)

Norios? Sansei? Ocean Sushi?

I haven't eaten sushi at Sansei, but I like their fish.

Ocean Sushi...hate the service. The sushi is "okay".

Norios...is that the little place on the Bay-Front side street? (Can't remember the street name) If so, the sushi is decent but the vibe is really weird--still not worth the price. I'm biased since my sushi-eating career began in Japan where the image of a "good sushi restaurant" assumes high quality food, but is incomplete without a personable sushi chef who talks to (and entertains) customers. The little place on Bay Front is run by a Japanese couple who I've never once seen crack a smile or make a friendly comment. We tried getting them to talk but to no avail. Been there once--actually twice but they ignored us the second time (we were the only two in the restaurant), so we left without ordering. Will never go back.

Now I've heard there's a great new Japanese restaurant in the Waikoloa complex. I shudder just thinking about how much it'll cost...but my friends at the Hilton tell me they've got specials if you go around (or before?) 5 pm.

I'll stay home and roll my own, thank you very much! :-)

Norios is at the Fairmont Orchid (Kona side obviously)

Ever been there?

I have been there a few of times and it is so darn good. Chef Norio is from Japan, flys in fresh fish from Tsujiki Market, Honolulu fish market, the whole nine...

Ive been spoiled there so much I am afraid to try anything other than Norios...

But I am always willing to try new things especially on advice from a "pro-sushi-eater" as yourself...
